Building Better Communities And a Better Planet

Working Together to Do What’s Right

Our service culture is the heart of our business — and it extends to our employees, communities and planet. From creating a great place to work, to serving our local neighborhoods and schools, to becoming an EPA Top 30 for our environmental initiatives, we strive to make the world a better place.

Our work is guided by world-class frameworks such as the Global Reporting Index (GRI) and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol, and we’re always looking to increase our level of disclosure around our environmental, social and governance responsibilities.

Our People

Rack Gives Back

Started as a small group of Rackers who wanted to do some good in the local San Antonio community, Rack Gives Back is now a global effort to serve the neighborhoods where we live, work and play. We serve side-by-side, helping those in need and encouraging better corporate citizenship.

Rack Gives Back also supports the community through corporate grants*. Over 80% of our charitable giving is focused on K-12 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs — sharing critical skills that foster innovation and creativity. Since 2008, we have donated more than $6.3 million dollars into our local communities.

The Rackspace Foundation

The Rackspace Foundation funds non-profits that work in and with our neighborhood schools (we call them the “Magnificent Seven”) to provide enriching, meaningful experiences to the youth in our community. The Rackspace Foundation is funded 100% by employee payroll contributions, with every dollar raised going right back into our neighborhood.

Since its creation in 2009, our employees have donated over $4 million into the Rackspace Foundation.

Buying, Building and Operating Responsibly

Our Supplier Code of Conduct guides our relationships with suppliers — helping ensure they uphold the same ethical, environmental and business standards as we do, both upstream and downstream the supply chains.

Additionally, we consider diversity in our supplier selection, seeking to increase the pool of diverse suppliers and awarding business accordingly. Our definition of diversity includes:

  • Women-Owned
  • Military/Veteran-Owned (includes DBVE)
  • Minority-Owned (MWBE definition)
  • LGBT-Owned
  • Small Business (includes SDB, DBE, HUB)

Our Stance on Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking

We have a high standard in ensuring we operate ethically and responsibly in all the places we operate, around the globe. This includes adhering to human rights in our own business model as collaborators, as well as those of our suppliers. As part of this commitment, we abide by the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and ensure proper steps are taken to eradicate violations of these basic human rights. Environmental Leadership

Our environmental strategy is simple: We aspire to give more than we take from our planet and support innovative technologies that change the energy industry for the better.

We do this through renewable energy, conservation and advocacy, as detailed in our Global Energy Policy. We also collaborate regularly with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), government entities and peer companies through organizations such as The Green Grid, and we’re proud to be founding members of OpenStack and the Open Compute Project (OCP).

100% Renewable Energy by 2026

We seek to power our global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2026, by making 5% incremental increases each year. We’re on schedule, having reached 55% renewables in 2017. Some of our biggest energy-saving initiatives include open air free cooling and the ability to manage light, heat and cooling zones based on operational demand.

We’re a member of RE100 and have been recognized in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 30 tech and telecom partnership companies and the National Top 100.

Measuring our Greenhouse Emissions

We have prepared a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory (scope 1, 2, partial 3) every year since 2008 for all of our operations worldwide. Having a better understanding of our footprint allows us to identify high-impact efficiency projects that help us to conserve resources and benchmark. For example, we use specialized air filters in our London office, reducing CO2e by 2,000kgs per year.

We also participate in the Climate Change Agreement (CCA), which is a UK voluntary scheme for energy intensive industries, and we have responded to the CDP Climate Change survey since 2011.

Minimize Waste

Conserving our planet’s natural capital comes in many forms, from responsibly disposing of data center assets to providing sustainable materials within our workspaces. We’ve found creative ways to minimizing waste on our campuses, such as composting coffee grounds and shipping pallets, refurbishing retired IT equipment for aftermarket use and collecting HVAC condensate to maintain landscaping and operate cooling towers.

Our Planet

Ethics and Integrity

We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of business conduct and corporate governance — essential elements to running our business and maintaining our integrity in the marketplace.

Privacy and Security

Our Privacy Policy supports our culture of respecting privacy, honoring our privacy commitments and meeting our legal and regulatory compliance obligations. It also helps us stay ahead of emerging privacy concerns and risks.

Workplace Health

We take our environmental and workplace responsibilities seriously. In support of this, we have implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) that has earned ISO 14001 certification for our data centers and offices in Australia and the United Kingdom.

We are also certified to BS OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety) in all our United Kingdom locations for our commitment to workplace wellbeing and ensuring our employees work in as safe and sustainable an environment as possible.
