The obstacles they faced
Pure Storage has always kept its eye on the next big thing. To make integrations seamless and continue delivering the ease of use that its customers expect, Pure needs to stay on the forefront on industry trends. As containers became more practical and a proven technology, Pure took notice.
“We saw a few years ago that containers were going to be the next big thing,” said Simon Dodsley, Technical Director at Pure Storage. “And our storage is perfect for containerized worlds. It's incredibly fast, API-driven, seamless and simple. When you add that into the persistent storage capabilities of something like Kubernetes, it’s a no brainer.”
When Google introduced Anthos, Pure Storage saw the opportunity they were waiting for. Anthos provides a consistent platform for all customer application deployments, both legacy as well as cloud native, while offering a service-centric view of customer environments. Pure Storage knew that if they could successfully demonstrate their value on such a robust solution, it would be a boon for its business.
When Pure decided it wanted to build reference architecture on Anthos and leverage Kubernetes, it was critical to work with a partner who could move fast given how quickly Kubernetes goes through releases.
“You can't wait six months, because it will be out of date by that point, and you'll have to start the whole cycle again on the next release and the next iteration,” explains Dodsley.
“The system integration capabilities that Rackspace Technology provides made the decision to do this project much easier.”
Rackspace Technology, alongside IT consultant firm IGNW, who had the very first Anthos Fellow, allowed Pure to compress its timelines easily and hit their aggressive timeframes, some of which were defined by alliance partnerships.
“Our initial timeline was a 90-day development to release schedule,” recalled Geoff Goetz, Director of Strategic Alliances at Pure Storage. “We didn't want to be the last to market with our capabilities around Anthos. Rackspace Technology did a really nice job of defining the schedule that would hit those deadlines.”
