Why Azure is a Great Cloud Destination for Oracle Applications

This summer Oracle and Microsoft announced a partnership that bridged the gap between Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Microsoft and Oracle will now be working together to help businesses embrace cloud computing by providing increased choice and flexibility in their deployment of Oracle software.

Customers can now seamlessly connect Oracle Cloud services, like the autonomous database and real application clusters to Azure services for example, data analytics and AI. Now enterprises can run part of a workload within Azure and another part of the same workload within the Oracle Cloud, the partnership delivers a highly optimized, best-of-both-clouds solution.

Oracle is now a service provider for ExpressRoute enabling direct connectivity to Azure. This means customers no longer need to route the traffic through an intermediate service provider for establishing connectivity between Azure and OCI.

And here we look at some of the options for running Oracle solutions using Azure Cloud infrastructure.

Running Oracle databases on Azure Public Cloud
You can run Oracle databases on Azure infrastructure using Linux images available in the Azure Marketplace:

  • Oracle Database 12.1, 12.2, and 18.3 Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle Database 12.1, 12.2, and 18.3 Standard Edition

You can also create a virtual machine based on a custom image you create from scratch in Azure or you can upload a custom image from your on-premises environment.

These virtual machines can be configured with multiple attached disks to improve database performance by installing Oracle Automated Storage Management (ASM).

By migrating to cloud companies can innovate faster, increase productivity, lower costs, and benefit from enhanced security features.

Running Oracle Applications on WebLogic Server and Oracle Linux
Customers can run enterprise applications in Azure on supported Oracle operating systems. The following are some of the images are available in the Azure Marketplace:

  • Oracle Linux (UEK) 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6

Deploy Oracle applications on Azure
Customers can use Terraform templates to set up Azure infrastructure and install Oracle applications validated and supported to run in a cross-cloud configuration:

  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne
  • PeopleSoft
  • Oracle Retail applications
  • Oracle Hyperion Financial Management

They can also deploy custom applications in Azure that connect with OCI and other Azure services.

Customers can achieve the scalability, flexibility and compliance their business requires for Oracle Enterprise workloads.

  • Ensure that Oracle applications always have the storage and compute resources they need with infrastructure flexibility from Azure.

Disaster recovery and high availability options
Help your business to keep doing business—even during major IT outages with the following features:

  • DBA’s can configure Oracle Data Guard, Active Data Guard, or Oracle GoldenGate on Azure infrastructure in conjunction with availability zones.
  • Customers can utilise Azure Site Recovery to orchestrate and manage disaster recovery for their Oracle Linux VMs in Azure and their on-premises or physical servers.
  • Use Oracle Database Cloud Services (Autonomous Database, RAC, Exadata, DBaaS, Single Node) in conjunction with Oracle applications running in Azure.
  • Enable Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) in Azure using FlashGrid SkyCluster.

With Azure Active Directory, Microsoft extended the features of AD to the cloud enabling single sign-on for enterprise applications and web applications deployed in the cloud.

With the cross-cloud connectivity, Oracle customers can integrate access management based on Azure Active Directory through a federated identity model. This delivers a unified mechanism for authentication and authorizing users and applications.

The benefits of federated Identity include single sign-on, reduced security risks and increased organisational productivity.
