Rackspace gives back by schooling on IT
Some savvy Solution Architects donated their time to IT students through ‘Rack Gives Back’, a company initiative for employees to donate their time to local community projects. It's an important part of our culture and our latest initiative involved hosting Harlington School’s 6th form IT students. The day included explaining the wonders of cloud computing and introducing them to the different career paths that IT has to offer.
The budding students began the day with an office tour of our bespoke space which includes an atrium, a slide and even a quiet room. And this was followed by workshops and presentations. IT Teacher William McGovern praised us for delivering engaging content and facilitating an enriching learning experience.
They were also introduced to the wider world of professional IT with cloud foundations and given a deeper understanding into our strategic partnerships with some of the biggest cloud companies. They were especially engaged when building their own server using some of our on-site hardware. The students were really interested in building a cloud environment for an online game, using traditional infrastructure and cloud options. And we also introduced them to big data using real life examples via Snapchat and Fortnite, apps and games they are familiar with.
Harlington School have directly attributed the increased number of girls taking IT A Level to our ongoing relationship and involvement in their curriculum. With this in mind we held a session on 'Women in Tech'. Our local IT teacher is predicting even more females in next year's classes and is thrilled we are playing such a large part in this.
This day is one example of how we are encouraging better corporate citizenship.
A special thank you to my fellow Rackers Mark Folson, Saikumar Iyer, Bibiana Borosova, Ben Morgan-Smith, Thomas Bottrill, Daniel Mahoney, the GSS department as a whole who helped me facilitate and lead this project.
