Figuring out which version of SharePoint® you need can be confusing. Here’s an explanation of the two ways you can deploy SharePoint:
Windows SharePoint Services (WSS)
WSS platform comes bundled with Windows Server and Microsoft Small Business Server. This version includes all of the basic SharePoint functionality to allow you to quickly launch an Intranet for your business. Onsite deployment can be fairly straight-forward with minimal IT skills, but you'll have to be vigilant about maintaining adequate server space or opt for a hosted route.
Rackspace offers hosted SharePoint service to give businesses the benefits of SharePoint without the hassle of managing it.
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS)
With MOSS, you have the same features as WSS with extras to streamline communication. Additional features in MOSS include: content approval workflows, enhanced user profiles, and portal administration tools for IT admins. Deploying and managing MOSS onsite requires technical skills and additional investments in licenses. You can also opt to host MOSS on dedicated hardware to absorb some of the initial deployment costs and ongoing upkeep.
Dedicated SharePoint service from Rackspace offers businesses all the hardware they need to run MOSS backed by Fanatical Support™.
