Database Maintenance Considerations for SharePoint 2010

http://player.vimeo.com/video/11927048

Microsoft SharePoint expert Michael Gannotti is a wealth of knowledge regarding the ins and outs of Sharepoint. This video addresses the question of database maintenance operations in the new Sharepoint 2010. Some of the considerations for SQL Server 2008 database maintenance include:

  • Defragging: You will want to make sure your databases aren’t so large that defragging becomes a perpetual process.
  • Cluster: Michael suggests avoiding a standalone database. Opt for clustered databases instead; should disaster strike, recovery will be greatly improved.
  • Availability: Several availability options exist in SharePoint 2010. You’ll want to ensure your databases are highly available, especially if you’re running an Enterprise SharePoint site.

As for data protection, recovery and security, Microsoft and their partners offer numerous end-to-end products. Looking into these services might be a worthwhile investment.
