Rackspace Cloud Sites First 48, 3-1 Registering and/or Transferring Domain Names

NOTE: This article is written for our Classic Cloud Control Panel. You can access this interface from the New Cloud Control Panel by clicking your username in the upper-right of the control panel and choosing the previous control panel from the menu.

Cloud Sites makes it easy for you to purchase a domain name directly through the Rackspace Cloud Control Panel. Below, we will go through the process for Registering a New Domain Name and Transferring Your Existing Domain.

Registering a New Domain Name

NOTE: If you are registering a new domain name through the Control Panel, the DNS will automatically be setup for you to point to the Rackspace Cloud.

  • Click Add New Site
  • Select the correct Site Owner (usually "You")
  • Next, enter the domain name you want to purchase in the "Domain Name" text box (i.e. www.yourdomain.com)

  • Choose the length of time for which you want to purchase the domain name

Click here to view full size image

  • The next screen will allow you to review your new domain purchase order. If you are ready to purchase, then click Finish

Transferring Your Existing Domain

Transferring the registrar of your existing domain name to Cloud Sites is the preferred method for moving your website.  By transferring your registrar, you will have all of your domain information accessible in one place which makes it possible for us to help you with the renewal of the domain name and other Support issues. You can transfer your existing domain to Cloud Sites and receive an additional year of ownership for only $10.

NOTE: Transferring your existing domain does not automatically update the DNS at the domain registrar level. You will need to manually update your DNS if you would like to make your domain live on The Rackspace Cloud.

Follow these steps to transfer your existing domain name to Cloud Sites:

  • Enter the domain name in the Domain Name text box

  • Check the I already own/manage this domain name check box
  • Select Transfer the domain name from the pull-down menu

  • Click Next Step
  • Last, you will review your order and click Finish once you are ready to process the order

NOTE: Your current registrar may offer "transfer lock" or a similar service as a security measure to prevent unauthorized transfer of your domain name. If this feature is activated, you will need to log on to your account with your current registrar in order to unlock the domain. If you try to transfer a domain that still has the transfer lock enabled, the transfer will be denied by your current registrar. In order to turn the transfer lock function off, you must have access to the administrative email address you used when first registering the domain. Your current registrar will send an email to this account that will require a reply from you, confirming that the transfer is authorized. If you do not have access to this email address, contact customer support for help. You can do a WHOIS search to find the administrative email and the current registrar for the domain. See How do I do a WHOIS search? for more information.

NOTE: All DNS changes take up to 48 hours to take effect. During this time you can check your website by using the test URL (i.e. www.yourdomain.com.websitetestlink.com).

This concludes How to Register Your Domain and Domain Transfers. If at any point you need additional assistance, please contact Support and a Fanatical Racker will answer any questions you may have.

In the next article, we'll discuss DNS record managment for your Rackspace Cloud Sites.

I just purchased a rackspaceCloud server, and the instructions for purchasing a domain name don't really match up with what I'm seeing in my control panel.
Under Hosting I have the options: Cloud Files, Cloud Servers, Load Balancers. Their is a DNS page under Cloud Servers, but it doesn't seem to have any info about purchasing a new domain name.

I'm afraid there isn't an avenue for purchasing domains through the control panel for Cloud Servers (these instructions are for Cloud Sites, a shared web hosting service). To get a domain you'll want to buy it through another service dedicated to registering domains (try a web search for a "domain registrar").

What good is a tutorial if it's wrong? Get on the stick and rewrite the tutorial so it matches the real world.

I do see at the opening that the "add a site" step should be moved up a bit, so I'll fix that now. Sorry about that. What other issues are you having with the tutorial?

Why no mention in the article about how to configure the domain and how to find IP address to bind?

many techincal articles on rackspace are poorly written. for example, the below line needs more clarification:

what the hell is websitetestlink here?

I'll see about adding a link to an article there that explains the test link. If you get details on a Cloud Site you should find a "test URL" that lets you access the site without needing to set up your own DNS for it. Those test links are presented as subdomains of the domain "websitetestlink.com".

I know you can register the domain, but I'm not sure that you can manage domain privacy through our system. I'll try to find out, but I know we're not primarily a domain registrar. You might get fuller features for the WHOIS domain management by registering the domain with a dedicated registrar, then managing the domains' DNS information via the Cloud Sites control panel from there.

I've tried two different domains that are currently at two different hosts/registrars and for both it says "The domain 9lenses1cloud.com cannot be automatically registered or transferred."

It does not say "I already own / manage this domain and would like to use it for my site"

There's literally no step forward I can find. The guy I called on the phone made it sound like it was my fault, but I even started from scratch and cannot get it to work.

Odd. It should give that "cannot be automatically registered or transferred" message, and then below that should be a checkbox reading, "I already own this domain. Set up the website without registering or transferring the domain name." If you check that box and click next it should continue the process.

Are you not seeing that checkbox? If not, have you tried a different browser (like Firefox or Chrome)?

I'm not seeing the checkbox, as my message states. I told you what I'm seeing instead.

I'm already using Chrome and tried in Firefox, same issue.

And it isn't giving the chance to click a "Next Step" button either? Does it have anything at all under the warning message, like a field to enter a different domain name?

I'm asking because I'm having trouble replicating the problem (I was able to advance using the domain name you listed above when creating a Cloud Site).

Do you have any browser add-ons installed that might interfere with javascript, or have you changed settings with regard to how your browsers process javascript?

Yes, I can click "Next Step" - but the process fails because it's missing this one crucial element, so there's no way to login to the wordpress site in the end

I just tried in Safari too.

What I need is: someone to help me make a fresh install of wordpress on a site in my new Cloud Sites account. I'm available almost all day tomorrow except 12-1pm EST.

I don't have access to accounts, but I'll see about getting this to someone who can. I see you have your domain pointed to our DNS servers as the authorities, but I don't get any result right now when I look up your domain.

You might try setting the site up then setting a simple index.htm file up with the text "Hello world" or such. Trying to access that (by just going to your domain name in a browser) could at least determine whether it's a problem with the Cloud Site or with WordPress.

You might also check the DNS settings in the Control Panel. If a DNS record didn't get set up then it could explain some of the problems getting to the site. You might need to create the A records for your domain manually.
