Dedicated Hosting vs. Cloud Hosting Comparison

Product / Service Dedicated Managed Cloud Cloud CORE

Support Level

Dedicated hosting includes unlimited Fanatical Support for all supported products, services, and software.

Managed Cloud includes support of datacenter environment, host server hardware, and Internet connectivity.

Managed Cloud support also includes direct server access to perform troubleshooting and configuration of supported applications.

Cloud CORE includes support of datacenter environment, host server hardware, and Internet connectivity only.

Agents are prohibited from logging into customers' servers to provide systems administration support.

Provisioning Speed

Average 3-5 days (Complex configurations or advanced services can extend the build timeline).

Firewall

Dedicated Firewalls are available as an option, and are a strongly recommended security precaution.

Optional dedicated firewall if leveraging RackConnect.

Monitoring

RackWatch monitoring is included, and enabled by default for Ping service checks. Upon request, 6 additional service checks, and one free URL monitor can be configured.

Managed Cloud Servers includes several checks and alerts through our Cloud Monitoring service.  Our support will help you with the creation and configuration of monitoring checks.

No monitoring is included for Core Services.

Without a third party monitoring solution or use of our Cloud Monitoring service, customers will not be notified of individual services on your Cloud Server going down.  You will only be notified if the host server where your Cloud Server lives is impacted.

Backups

Managed Backup is an optional service which captures file-level server images. There is a backup limitation of 1.5TB per server unless employing optional High Capacity Backup service.  Database and Exchange Backup agents are available for an additional charge.  Service extends to database flat file dumps/maintenance plans.

Our file-level Cloud Backup service is available to Managed Cloud customers with the monthly fee waived.  The only costs are for the disk storage required for backups on Cloud Files and any bandwidth used if backup data is sent between datacenters.

Snapshots are an alternative backup approach at the system level.  Snapshot scheduling is not enabled by default but can be manually configured.  Customers should perform DB backup before creating an image.

Resizing

Scaling up and down is dependent on the dedicated servers hardware capabilities. (Available drive bays, RAM limitations, processor options). All is subject to a physical hardware maintenance and datacenter scheduling availability.

Windows Cloud servers can be resized up, but currently cannot be scaled back down.

Linux servers can scale both up and down.

This process does not happen automatically and must be initiated by customer.

Bandwidth

Dedicated servers come with a specific amount of included bandwidth.

Additional bandwidth is available at pre-paid rates (bandwidth overage rates apply if subscription is exceeded).

No bandwidth is included unless solution is RackConnected. If RackConnected, the Cloud Servers can consume any available bandwidth included with customer's dedicated configuration.

If not RackConnected customers are charged for outgoing bandwidth only.

fix formatting please - this is very hard to follow as the list of topics at the top should be along the left side...

Thanks Owen. Our recent site redesign broke the formatting on some articles, and we're still them all down. Appreciate you bringing this one to our attention.
