WordPress 3.01 + CDN Tools 1.0 Plugin

You can speed up your WordPress blog by using Cloud Files with CDN Technology to display content to users faster and more efficiently. You can distribute common files or content such as css, javascript, images, videos and much more through a CDN, which serves the content from the closest edge server to the end-user.

In this article we will explain how to configure WordPress with CDN Tools plugin which will use the CDN for the images that you use in your posts. Please note the plugin does not use CDN for the CSS file, javascript file, logo, related post images, or any image in the layout design.

The steps below are best practices and have been tested and verified to optimize performance on a default installation of WordPress with default theme.

Step 1

Download the WordPress Plugin CDN Tools: Deactivate and delete any other caching plugin you may be using.

Step 2

Login as an administrator to your WordPress Admin account. On the left hand menu, click on the “Plugins” tab then "Add New."

Step 3

Search for “CDN Tools” and click “Install Now.” If you have already downloaded the plugin, click the "Upload" link, find the .zip file you download, and click "Install Now". You can also unzip and use an FTP client to upload the plugin to your plugins directory (wp-content/plugins/).

In all cases, wp-content/plugins/cdntools/ should exist when completed.

If successfully installed you should see: Successfully installed the plugin “CDN Tools.”

Step 4

Under the Settings Tab click on the CDN Tools and enter your Cloud Files API key and Username found inside the manage.rackspacecloud.com control panel; save changes.

Step 5

Click on the “Upload files” to Cloud Files. It will automatically create a container named cdntools and upload the images for you. The plugin will also post the images using the CDN .

Verify the CDN is working by reviewing the properties of the image posts; it should reflect a url.

You may need to allow some time for propagation from the Cloud Files server to the edge servers. If you have waited 24 hours for propagation and the website still does not seem to be as optimal as you like, you please consider WordPress plugin W3 Total Cache.
