Configuring Rackspace Cloud Files with Cyberduck

The following article will help you configure the Cyberduck FTP Client with Rackspace Cloud Files. Cyberduck allows users to Manage their Rackspace Cloud Files storage account and the configuration of Akamai content delivery network (CDN). Take a look at the following steps:

U.S Cyberduck Configuration

1. Download the Cyberduck FTP client at the following URL: http://cyberduck.ch/

2. Install the FTP client on your machine and then login to https://mycloud.rackspace.com/ to grab your API Key.

3. Log into your control panel and select API Keys under your account at the top. Select Show Key in the API Key section and copy your API key.

4. Open your Cyberduck FTP client and select Rackspace Cloud Files from the list. Enter your control panel username and paste the API key into the password field. When complete, select Login.

5. Once you're logged in, you'll be able to view, share, and add content through the Cyberduck interface.

UK Cyberduck Configuration

1. Download the Cyberduck FTP client at the following URL: http://cyberduck.ch/

2. Install the FTP client on your machine and then login to https://mycloud.rackspace.co.uk/ to grab your API Key.

3. Log into your control panel and select API Keys under your account at the top. Select Show Key in the API Key section and copy your API key.

4. Open your Cyberduck FTP client and select the "+" symbol in the lower left hand corner to add a bookmark. In the pop up screen, select Swift (OpenStack Object Storage) from the drop down menu. In the server field enter the following along with your username below: lon.auth.api.rackspacecloud.com

5. Close out the window and double click on the bookmark. In the pop up screen, enter your control panel username and paste the API key into the password field. When complete, select Login. Once you're logged in, you'll be able to view, share, and add content through the Cyberduck interface.

I am referring to the U.S. configuration. You need another screen shot. Step 4 only mentions two fields, when in fact there are three. And this is the part which I find confusing. There is the field for the API key, and then two other fields. I put my username into both of the those fields, as I didn't have any thing else to use.
And it didn't work. Which is why I am asking for another screen shot.
Thanks.

I was getting cloudberry and cyberduck mixed up. You don't need another screen shot here.
The cloudberry set up asks for display & user name - for which you use the same value.
Thanks.

No problem, Chris. Please let us now if you need any other assistance.

Can this be updated to show how to access files in ORD? Seems like this only shows how to access those files in DFW

Unfortunately Cyberduck's Cloud Files support only applies to DFW at this time. They have support for other regions on their to-do list (http://trac.cyberduck.ch/ticket/6902) but for now Cyberduck won't access ORD. For now you may need to use the web interface, the API, or a command-line tool like python-swiftclient (https://github.com/openstack/python-swiftclient).

I'm using the Swift setup from my Mac. It will not allow me to enter the Web URL. When I try and connect using my user name and API key, it just returns "login failed" I am logging in from the UK.

You shouldn't need to modify the web URL - the "server" value is the part you'd need to set for the UK URL, per step 4 in the UK section above.

I need to check on this, but if you have both UK and US accounts you might see if you get a different API key going to the UK version of the Cloud Control Panel:

https://mycloud.rackspace.co.uk

Rather than saying "Enter the API access key right after the user name" better to say "Enter the API access key into the password field"

Hey Roger,

thank you for the recommendation. We're always looking for ways to improve our content and so we've re-evaluated the phrasing and made some minor updates. Thank you again.

Will ANY FTP program function akin to Cyberduck for managing Cloud Files, or is the capability unique to Cyberduck

Thanks,
Glenn Meadows

Cloud Files doesn't actually support FTP. FTP is a specific protocol ("File Transfer Protocol", to be precise), and Cloud Files only gives access through its own API interface. Cyberduck supports both Cloud Files and FTP, but most FTP programs don't support Cloud Files.

If you have trouble with Cyberduck there are other tools that support Cloud Files, though many are commercial. Other options include Storage Made Easy, Gladinet, and CloudBerry Drive.

Jered, thanks for the pointers. I've gotten CD working, the instructions were missing a step. The base CyberDuck, as downloaded, does NOT have the preloaded bookmarks, like the graphic shows in the configuration instruction, you have to hit the "+" at the bottom of the screen, to ADD a new bookmark from the pre-configured options. That is where you select Cloud Files, and that gives you the correct login screen where you can past the API Key. Took me about 15 minutes of slogging around to find that, and get it working correctly. Once THAT was done though, WOW, super quick directory listings, etc. We several hundred files in out cloud storage area, that are all linked for online streaming, and the ability to right click, select Get Info, and then get the CDN urls right there is WAY faster than slogging through 8-10+ screens of files via the website. This will be a tremendous time saver. Kudos to CyberDuck, and RackSpace for getting this funcional. I'll be making a donation to CyberDuck, just because of the time it's going to save.!

Thanks.
Glenn Meadows

Thanks for the feedback Glenn. We'll clean up that part of the article so other people don't run into the same problem.

And I do love Cyberduck. Whatever they get in donations, it's definitely not enough.

Hey Glenn, we double checked the steps and upon downloading and opening cyberduck, Rackspace Cloud Files is preloaded in the bookmarks. If you downloaded cyberduck from the link provided in step 1, everything should be written correctly. Did you download cyberduck from a different location?
