Transferring a Domain to Rackspace

You can change the name servers for an existing domain to the Rackspace name servers by following these steps:

  1. Use the Rackspace Cloud Control Panel to create corresponding DNS records for your domain.

  2. Log into your domain registrar's account and locate the section that specifies the name servers.

  3. Change the name servers to the Rackspace name servers:
  • ns.rackspace.com
  • ns2.rackspace.com

The following name servers will work as well:

  • dns1.stabletransit.com
  • dns2.stabletransit.com

Changing the name servers initiates the transfer of the domain to the Rackspace name servers.

Note: For most domains the propagation takes 48 hours.

It would be great if RackSpace could fetch previous DNS records from previously used nameserver. Now i have to manually enter every single A,MX and CNAME record.

Thanks for the feedback Uli. You might also post the suggestion to our product feedback forum, where they collect suggestions like this for comment:

After creating the domain in the DNS section, the page indicates name servers ns.rackspace.com and ns1.rackspace.com ... this page indicates that I should be using the name servers at stabletransit.com ... which is correct??

Both are correct, actually - either will work. We'll update this article to suggest the rackspace.com servers and try to clear up the confusion.

I have registered my domain on 1&1.com. I tried to mapped same domain here which started showing in my domain list. I am not sure if it created a new temp domain for me or it's referring to the one I own at 1&1.com. Any suggestion?

Hello Krish,

Hello, I just transfer the site http://wedubox.com from our previous hosting to rackspace, there is any chance to have the DNS replica faster than 48 hours?

thanks

The DNS replication isn't actually a process we control. On your previous host you'd want to find out what the time-to-live, or "TTL", is set to for your domain. The TTL is how long outside DNS servers will remember the information they retrieve from your DNS server. If the TTL is 48 hours it means that DNS servers that have previously queried your domain (for a site visitor, for instance) won't check for any changes for 48 hours after that last check.

You might see if you can control the TTL on your current service. If so, set it to a lower value, wait enough time that the old TTL would no longer apply to previous visitors, then make your switch.

Must we transfer our domain names? In the past we had set up our own DNS to point to rackspace cloud sites. Why is this so hard to do?

You should be able to use external DNS to point to your Cloud Sites IP addresses. Sorry that isn't clear. Having Cloud Sites manage the DNS is a convenience, but not a necessity.

Dear Rackspace,

I have a domain name and hosting register at matbao.com. Then, I transfer to RackSpace cloud and create record as below.
1. At RackSpace
www.chonang.vn A 166.78.106.243
chonang.vn NS dns1.stabletransit.com
chonang.vn NS dns2.stabletransit.com
2. At domain register,
I point name server to RackSpace at :"ns1.rackspace.com." and point a host to RackSpace cloud.
1 @ 166.78.106.243

3. When I browse http://www.chonang.vn/magento, the browser auto redirect to the actual public ip address of RackSpace:"http://166.78.106.243/magento/"

=> How can I fix the issue "http://166.78.106.243/magento/" to http://www.chonang.vn/magento.

My account at RackSpace :"huyngo81"

Regards,
Huy
