Creating DNS Records for Cloud Servers: New Control Panel

Note: This article is written for our New Cloud Control Panel. A version of this article is also available for our Classic Cloud Control Panel.

Creating DNS records for your domain is easy to do within the New Cloud Control Panel. In this article, we will look at creating a DNS zone for your domain and adding basic A, MX, and CNAME records using the New Cloud Control Panel.

Contents:

Adding a Domain

  1. First we'll long into the New Cloud Control Panel and select DNS at the top.

  2. Next, select Create Domain under Cloud DNS and enter in the domain name, email address, Time To Live (TTL), and then select Create Domain once more.

Note: Time To Live indicates how long a DNS record is cached before it's updated.

  3. You'll then see your domain listed in the domain section as well options to create other DNS records as well.

Adding an A Record

Next, let's go through the process of adding an A Record for your domain.

  1. First we'll long into the New Cloud Control Panel and select DNS at the top.
  2. Next, select your Domain in the list and then select Add Record under Records. Select A/AAAA Record for the type and fill out the following fields accordingly.

  3. After you've entered everything in, select Add Record and you're finished!

Adding a CNAME Record

Next, we'll go through the process of setting up MX Records for your domain. Let's take a look:

  1. First we'll long into the New Cloud Control Panel and select DNS at the top.
  2. Next, select your Domain in the list and then select Add Record under Records. Select CNAME Record for the type and fill out the following fields accordingly.

  3. After you've entered everything in, select Add Record and you're finished!

  Adding an MX Record

Next, we'll go through the process of setting up MX Records for your domain. Let's take a look:

  1. First we'll long into the New Cloud Control Panel and select DNS at the top.
  2. Next, select your Domain in the list and then select Add Record under Records. Select CNAME Record for the type and fill out the following fields accordingly.

Deleting a Record

Next, we'll go through the process of Deleting a DNS Record for your domain. Let's take a look:

  1. First we'll long into the New Cloud Control Panel and select DNS at the top.
  2. Next, in the list of domains available select the socket icon next to the desired domain and then select Delete Record.

What's the purpose of the email field?

The email field is used in the SOA record for the domain. It's basically a contact email address for the person responsible for managing the records in the domain.

Hi. I'm having a really hard time trying to delegate a subdomain to another nameserver (a.k.a. "re-delegate" or "sub-delegate").

Short version:
Basically, I'm after this kind of simple, common case setup:
http://timmart.in/blog/dynamic-dns-for-subdomains-with-free-dns-and-dd-wrt/

Large version:
I'm trying to create a few NS records for a subdomain, and point them to another (external, non-Rackspace) nameserver. This seems (and should be) a pretty standard procedure, but so far, I haven't had success.

So far, this is what I've tried:

First try:
I've a domain (example.com) delegated from my registrar to Rackspace. So then, in the DNS control panel (a.k.a. "Cloud DNS"), I've created an entry for that example.com domain. On that domain, I'd like to create a few NS records for a subdoamin (sub.example.com), and point them to another (external) nameserver (ns1.anotherdnameserver.com).

Problem is: it's *not possible* to add, via the Cloud DNS control panel, a NS record for a subdomain. Whenever I pick up the "NS record" option on the dropdown menu, the "Hostname" field gets a fixed, non-editable "example.com" value.

Second try:
A friendly member of the RS support on Live Chat suggested me to create an entry for "sub.example.com" domain, as if it was an entirely different domain. In other words, I hit the "Create Bomain" button on the Cloud DNS cpanel, and added "sub.example.com".
Then, I created the proper NS records for this subdomain, pointing them to "ns1.anothernameserver.com" (and others).
I really believed this was going to work... *but it didn't work at all*.
Even if the output of "dig sub.example.com -t NS" showed that the domain was delegated to "ns1.anothernameserver.com", it didn't work. Don't ask me why, I don't know.
Later, someone explained me that it was related to some SOA thing still being configured to use RS nameservers.

***Last try, final solution:***

As this was driving me crazy, I decided to ask for help at some IRC channels on freenode.net.
Solution came from the #rackspace room, where a friendly user helped me.
I told him my problem, and then he confirmed *it was not possible* to create the entry from the Cloud DNS control panel.
Then, after he confirmed my ownership of domain via a TXT record, he was able to add the NS records I was desperately needing via some API voodoo.
I was really happy and grateful with him, as I finally got the NS records I needed, after 2 days tearing my hair out.

**Final words**

Please, *fix this issue asap* (I really hate to ask things in this way).
Currently, it's *impossible* (afaik) to sub-delegate/re-delegate a subdomain to another nameserver using the Cloud DNS control panel (a.k.a. the web interface).
I lost a lot of time trying to figure how to do it, and I got it solved finally by someone at the unofficial IRC channel.

Of course, now I'm planning to learn the RS API so I can have more control over the configuration of my account and servers.

Thank you.

Thanks for passing that along, Julián, and sorry about the headache. I'll relay the recommendation to the control panel team, but you might also add a post to our product feedback forum:

That forum can be an easier path to get suggestions seen by the right eyes.

Interestingly, if you go to the first-generation control panel (through the user menu in the upper-left, or by going to the manage.rackspacecloud.com site), the DNS management there does appear to allow you to create and manage NS records for a subdomain. To get to the DNS management in the older control panel you need to access the DNS through the config for a cloud server, so you might need to temporarily create a first-gen cloud server first.
