Change the default document on your Windows IIS site

You can change the default index file for your site on Windows IIS by using a web.config file with the following code:

<configuration>
    <system.webServer>
        <defaultDocument>
            <files>
                <clear />
                    <add value="index.html" />
            </files>
        </defaultDocument>
    </system.webServer>
</configuration>

If both the index.aspx and default.aspx files are in your content folder, index.aspx loads first. The following list shows the order in which files load:

  1. iisstart.htm
  2. index.aspx
  3. index.asp
  4. index.html
  5. index.htm
  6. default.aspx
  7. default.asp
  8. default.html
  9. default.htm
