    Investor Relations RAX launched its IPO on August 7th, 2008, promptly "tanked" (Fortune's words, not mine), and kept going down from there (you may recall, we had one of the largest global financial crises in history that fall). It traded all the way down to $4.50, but the company put $187 million on its balance sheet for growth, and it was an emerging market leader with great business fundamentals. As you can see from the chart, RAX delivered for its shareholders quarter after quarter, eventually rising approximately 10X from its lows a mere 32 months later.

    Cloud Rackspace does seem to live up to their "fanatical" claim: all humans that I have spoken to from tech support to PR flak have been helpful and polite and have often called me (ie, at the company's expense). The only difficulty I had setting up their virtual machine, other than choosing from a wide selection of Linux distros, was with the software firewall (iptables) that I hadn't realised Rackspace sets up by default. Again, tech support was quick and helpful and had me sorted on live chat in minutes. I'm still bowled over by their charm offensive as you can tell: fanboi, moi?

    Cloud Jonathan Bryce founded one of the first cloud systems. He and a partner left their jobs at Rackspace in 2005 and launched their cloud business, Mosso, the following year. Though they were outside Rackspace, the ties remained strong. Bryce's older brother, who recruited him initially, still worked there, and Mosso's cloud functioned on Rackspace servers…InformationWeek editor-at-large Charles Babcock caught up with Bryce May 9 at Interop 2011 in Las Vegas, a UBM TechWeb event, to ask about operating a cloud architecture and the recent Amazon outage. Bryce refused to attack a competitor. Perhaps he was remembering the time in 2007 when a vehicle crash took out a transformer that controlled about half the power supply to Mosso. That and other experiences make him, at 29, a veteran cloud operator. Rackspace now operates 65,000 servers worldwide, though that number includes its managed hosting business.

    Rackspace will help create a new advisory board for the OpenStack project, the year-old open source effort to build Amazon-like "infrastructure clouds". This board will include "big backers and enterprise users" and "open-source" thought leaders, and it will drive the overall vision of the project. There are signs of consolidation in the industry: Verizon (VZ) is buying Terremark (TMRK) for $1.4 billion, and Time Warner Cable (TWC) is acquiring NaviSite (NAVI) for $230 million.
