What will future releases of Rackspace Private Cloud Software include?

Future releases of Rackspace Private Cloud Software will continue to provide additional support for the expanded OpenStack offerings, as well as the Havana release.

What OpenStack components are supported in Rackspace Private Cloud?

Rackspace Private Cloud v 4.0 uses the Grizzly code base of OpenStack and includes Compute (Nova), Image Service (Glance), Dashboard (Horizon), Identity (Keystone), Virtual Network Service (Quantum), and Ceilometer.

Object Storage (Swift), and Block Storage (Cinder) can be configured separately via the Rackspace Private Cloud Software cookbooks.

How is a Rackspace Private Cloud different from other OpenStack-based clouds?

Rackspace Private Cloud is an OpenStack configuration that has been developed, tested, and packaged by Rackspace OpenStack specialists. We've developed an OpenStack offering that is easy to install, with a configuration that comes from our expertise in developing OpenStack clouds for our customers.

Where can I deploy Rackspace Private Cloud?

You can deploy a Rackspace Private Cloud in your own data center or in a Rackspace-managed data center. It's suitable for all scenarios, ranging from initial evaluations to production deployments.

Who should use Rackspace Private Cloud?

Rackspace Private Cloud is suitable for anyone who wants to install a stable, tested, and supportable OpenStack private cloud.

What is Rackspace Private Cloud?

Rackspace Private Cloud is a set of tools that allows you to quickly install an OpenStack private cloud, configured as recommended by Rackspace OpenStack specialists.

Rackspace Private Cloud uses Chef to create an OpenStack cluster on Ubuntu, CentOS, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The installation scripts provide a familiar approach for Linux system administrators, and can be updated easily without downloading and installing a new ISO.

Account Services

Will Rackspace support my hardware and infrastructure?

If your cloud is hosted at a Rackspace data center, we'll manage the hardware and the network infrastructure. However, we won't administer your cloud or its contents-just the equipment that it's hosted on.

If your cloud is hosted in your own data center, supporting your hardware and infrastructure will be your responsibility too.

Will Escalation Support help me configure OpenStack for my environment?

No. Escalation Support only covers the configuration and components that are installed by Rackspace Private Cloud Software. Any OpenStack customizations and configuration that you apply beyond the out-of-the-box configuration are not covered by Escalation Support. What support is available from Rackspace?

You can access the Rackspace Private Cloud Software user forum for free. The forum is hosted by Rackspace and moderated by Rackspace OpenStack specialists.

Two different tiers of support ensure you can get as little or as much support as you need. Our Rackspace Private Cloud specialists are always available to help.

  • Core Software Support
    Your Support Engineers will remotely access and manage the Rackspace Private Cloud software stack including installation, configuration, patching, upgrade assistance, troubleshooting, monitoring, and alerting & resizing of the environment. Core Software Support for Swift Object Storage must be purchased separately.
  • Software Escalation Support
    You have an unlimited number of escalation requests for your Support Engineers who can advise on issues within your Rackspace Private Cloud software stack. Examples of possible requests include help with installation, configuration, troubleshooting, upgrading and resizing of your Private Cloud environment.

How do I install Rackspace Private Cloud, and what's included?

Rackspace Private Cloud Software v 4.0 deployed through a series of bash scripts in the following stages:

  1. Install Chef server on a node in the environment.
  2. Download the latest cookbooks to the Chef server.
  3. Install chef-client on each node that will be managed by Chef in your OpenStack cluster.
  4. Use Chef to create Controller nodes, Compute nodes, and more.

You can deploy Rackspace Private Cloud Software on Ubuntu 12.04, or CentOS 6.3.

What do I do when Rackspace Private Cloud cookbooks are updated?

When a new version of Rackspace Private Cloud is ready, upgrade information will be made available.

There is no method for a direct upgrade from a v 1.0 cluster or v 2.0 cluster to a v 3.0 or v 4.0 cluster; instead, you will have to create a new cluster with OpenCenter. If you want Rackspace assistance in managing and migrating backup images to a v 3.0 cluster, please email us at opencloudinfo@rackspace.com.

What do I do if there's a Rackspace Private Cloud patch?

When a patch or fix is available, updated packages will be available along with documentation for downloading it and applying it. If you have Escalation or Core Support, we can work with you to help you apply the patch.

I got a message that there were patches and updates after I finished installing. Should I apply them?

(Note that this question only applies to installations performed with the v.2.0 ISO.)

These operating system updates and patches may be safely applied. However, as a best practice in a production environment, Rackspace strongly recommends that you configure a mirror of your production environment in which you apply and test new OS patches and updates before applying them in production.

Does Rackspace Private Cloud come with any images?

Rackspace Private Cloud includes a CIRROS image and a Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) image. For more information about downloading and creating additional images, refer to the OpenStack Virtual Machine Image Guide.

Rackspace has developed a tool to convert single-disk Linux VMDK images to OpenStack-compatible qcow2 images. The conversion is accomplished by means of a Python script available at https://github.com/rcbops/support-tools/tree/master/vmdk-conversion. Multi-disk and Windows image conversions are not available at this time. Amazon AMI images can also be imported into Glance.

I've got my cloud installed—now what?

Congratulations! You can create a project, generate keypairs, add users, edit security settings, and, of course, launch instances. Refer to the Getting Started Guide for more information. Once you have the basic setup tasks complete, your cloud will be ready to use.

What if I want to grow my cloud beyond 20 nodes?

If you need more than 20 nodes, contact us at opencloudinfo@rackspace.com; we'd be glad to help you scale your cloud.

What are the minimum and maximum number of nodes for Rackspace Private Cloud?

Rackspace recommends a minimum of three nodes: one Chef server, one Controller, and one Compute. A fourth node may be required for Quantum. This installation method has been tested for up to up to 20 nodes.

Can I do an all-in-one installation of OpenStack on a single node?

The Rackspace Private Cloud Software OpenCenter framework does not allow you to build an all-in-one node, but you can use the ISO to do so. Rackspace recommends that you install an all-in-one node for testing purposes only.

Does Rackspace have login access to my cloud?

No. The only way we can access your cloud is if you are an Escalation Support customer and have provided us with credentials for troubleshooting.

Does the Rackspace Private Cloud install script send my information to Rackspace?

No. The install script does not send any information to Rackspace. The only information we get from you is the information you enter on the product download page.

Why does the node IP address need to have Internet access?

Rackspace Private Cloud Software downloads Ubuntu installation files as part of the installation process to ensure that you have the most up-to-date operating system that works with our software. If the node doesn't have internet access, the installation process will fail. You may also experience issues if the node is behind a firewall.

What host operating system does Rackspace Private Cloud use?

Rackspace Private Cloud v. 4.0 does not install any operating system. It is offered in Debian and RPM packages, and can be installed on Ubuntu 12.04 or CentOS 6.3. It has not been tested on versions of Ubuntu greater than 12.04 or on RHEL.

Can I install Rackspace Private Cloud on virtual machines?

Rackspace strongly recommends that you install Rackspace Private Cloud on physical hardware nodes running Ubuntu 12.04 or CentOS 6.3. Installation on virtual platforms should only be performed for evaluation purposes.

What hardware can I install Rackspace Private Cloud on?

The Chef server hardware should meet the following requirements:

  • 16 GB RAM
  • 144 GB disk space
  • Dual socket CPU with dual core, or single socket quad core

Rackspace recommends the following minimum requirements for a Controller node and a Compute node.

  • Controller Node:
    • 16 GB RAM
    • 144 GB disk space
    • Dual socket CPU with dual core, or single socket quad core
  • Compute Node:
    • 32 GB RAM
    • 144 GB disk space
    • Dual socket CPU with dual core, or single socket quad core

CPU overcommit is set at 16:1 VCPUs to cores, and memory overcommit is set to 1.5:1. Each physical core can support up to 16 virtual cores; for example, one dual-core processor can support up to 32 virtual cores. If you require more virtual cores, adjust your sizing appropriately.
