Capacity Calibration

When you can capture an entire end-to-end business transaction, parameterize it, supply it with data and run a load test of any size in 30 minutes or less you are experiencing CapCal on the Rackspace Cloud.  The CapCal Load and Performance Testing solution provides you this capability in a web-based, cloud-hosted and cloud-delivered solution that can be done for you or you can do it yourself in a pay-as-you-go pricing model.  Using the Rackspace Cloud to spin up ultra-light weight load agents in minutes, you can generate production level workloads that exercise your web application in ways that real users will, not in the sterile and isolated environment of the test lab. CapCal leverages Rackspace cloud computing for performance testing and is a quick, easy and affordable way of doing performance testing of websites and web applications.

With CapCal you can seamlessly integrate with existing functional testing tools and test with virtually any number of simulated users. CapCal’s distributed, service-oriented architecture tests applications inside and outside the firewall. Distributed agents generate real load through “virtual users”. Each agent simulates hundreds of unique Web users without dedicated hardware. Conduct dynamic group test sessions in real time and obtain results through intuitive online reports. CapCal is fully featured and able to meet even the toughest testing plans.

CapCal Host

Windows Server 2003, C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server 2005. By default a hosted (shared) resource, dedicated CapCal Hosts can also be spawned on the cloud. The shared (hosted) version has an account for each customer, which in turn has its own user accounts, tests and test results invisible to all others. In the dedicated (cloud-hosted) version, the customer has complete control of the server.

CapCal Controller

Small Java app optimized for Linux. Controllers are spawned by the host for the lifetime of a test. Any number of controllers can be managed by a given host. Controllers, like agents, can be deployed anywhere, inside or outside the firewall, on “bare metal” or the Cloud.

CapCal Agent

Small Java app optimized for Linux. Agents can be deployed on customer hardware, CapCal hardware, the CapCal distributed network or on the cloud with a 20 to 30 second bootup time. Each agent can spawn any number of virtual users, up to whatever bandwidth limit there is in terms of download speed. Tests have been run with over 300,000 virtual users although higher numbers are possible. Each virtual user maintains session state via cookies, 302 redirects and whatever mechanism the app uses.

CapCal Capture

A small Windows client that captures HTTP and HTTPS traffic to be used in creating test sessions. Test sessions are combined into test plans, which include all the parameters of test execution, like ramp time, hold time, virtual users, etc. Test data can be used to parameterize everything from logins to product codes, account numbers and so forth. Think time is built in but can also be controlled on a page by page basis. Tests can be created manually or captured via execution of a functional test tool like the ones from HP, Compuware, Worksoft, etc.

How It Works

From an icon in the Windows system tray, the user starts and stops the capture of browser sessions to be used in the test. Running a test is a matter of filling in a small form and submitting it. The test is uploaded to the host, scheduled and run as soon as a controller and agent pool is available, which is immediate unless scheduled to run later. The test can be watched in real time and canceled in the event of errors, excessive delays, etc. The page hit detail in the test results shows everything that happened, which can be extremely useful in tracking down bottlenecks and scalability traps.

    Hi There,

I am looking for load testing solution for my compnay’s new web project, which is about to launch in first week of Nov.

what we are looking for costing of load testing with 10000 concurrent users.

Let me know the way forward.

    Take care,

    Amit

  3. We’ve used CapCal’s services to do performance testing of customer’s site that had very, very high levels of load for intense bursts of time (an example: 21 million hits in 20 minutes). Without Randy Hayes and the CapCal test suite, we’d have never been able to tune our application for the kind of load our client anticipated (and eventually exceeded). I can’t recommend CapCal enough. If you need serious, professional performance testing, you can’t do better.

    Hi

we have a website that needs to be load tested. it would be a combination of high traffic 1 million hits for a short period of time and then a sustained test of 100k-200k users. does the capcal tool do this sort of testing? how do we go about it?

    cheers
