OpenStack®: the open alternative to cloud lock-in

Invented by Rackspace and NASA.

OpenStack is an open and scalable operating system for building public and private clouds. It provides both large and small organizations an alternative to closed cloud environments, reducing the risks of lock-in associated with proprietary platforms. OpenStack offers flexibility and choice through a highly engaged community of over 6,000 individuals and over 190 companies including Rackspace®, Dell, HP, IBM, and Red Hat®.

Supported by 6,000 Individuals and over 190 Customers

Rackspace knows how to support OpenStack. We helped build it.

Rackspace offers a broad portfolio of products and services for OpenStack cloud platforms.

Powerful and scalable public
cloud platform

Private cloud, anywhere—
in your data center or ours

Hands-on training so you can handle
your own OpenStack clouds

The Rackspace Cloud is an extremely open and versatile public cloud platform and is powered by OpenStack. Our complete portfolio of public cloud solutions includes compute, storage, databases, networks and more. Learn about our next generation cloud platform.
If you want to benefit from the scalability and self service capabilities of the cloud, but have security, location or other requirements, The Rackspace Private Cloud is for you. Rackspace will deploy and manage an OpenStack-powered private cloud for you that can be fully hosted at Rackspace, colocated in over 100 global partner data centers or hosted in your own data center.
Rackspace Training for OpenStack immerses students in the OpenStack environment so they can evaluate it for their use cases as well as improve performance of an existing installation. Students should walk away from the training course with the experience and knowledge to install, run and operate OpenStack clouds.

OpenStack® is an open and scalable cloud computing platform for building private and public clouds.

OpenStack is a collaborative software project designed to create freely available code, badly needed standards, and common ground for the benefit of both cloud providers and cloud customers.

Compute and Storage projects currently available on OpenStack:

OpenStack Compute

OpenStack Compute is designed to provision and manage large networks of virtual machines, creating a redundant and scalable cloud computing platform. It provides the software, APIs and control panels required to orchestrate a cloud environment, including running instances, managing networks, and controlling access through users and projects. OpenStack Compute strives to be both hardware- and hypervisor-agnostic, and supports a variety of hardware configurations and major hypervisors. Learn more about next generation Rackspace Cloud Servers™ which is built on the OpenStack Compute (Nova) code.

OpenStack Object Storage

OpenStack Object Storage provides redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of standardized servers. OpenStack Storage scales to store petabytes of data, making it well suited to handle virtual machine images, photo storage, email storage and backup archiving inexpensively, through data replication and distribution across commodity hard drives. Rackspace contributed the Cloud Files Swift code, which became OpenStack Object Storage. We believe that Rackspace Cloud Files is currently one of the largest, if not the largest, production deployment of OpenStack Object Storage. Learn more about next generation Rackspace Cloud Files™ which is built on the OpenStack Object Storage (Swift) code.
