Why Would I Want Physical Servers?

8

With many people adopting a cloud only solution, this is one question that I think should be asked more often, “I have my entire architecture in the cloud, so why would I want a physical server?”

While the scalability and flexibility of the cloud make it a great option to host websites and apps, there are some compelling cases to use physical servers as a compliment to your cloud configuration.

Find out why sometimes it is important to “think inside the box” and use physical gear in the video below.

Check out Joseph’s previous post where he answers the question, “Where should I host my DNS and email?”  You can also see the entire list of Cloud Questions You Didn’t Even Know You Had here.

This is a post written and contributed by Joseph Palumbo.

As a founding member of Rackspace's Managed Cloud Support Team, Joseph spends half of his time teaching customers about the Cloud and the other half learning about the Cloud from them. When he's not in meetings, he can be found presiding over cultural happenings around the Rackspace office, discussing support innovation with other 'Fanatics' and wishing paper documents had a built-in search function.

I was expecting an answer to the question “Why would I want a physical server?” Alas, it never came.

Hmmm, the video didn’t explain anything about why a physical box was better for the client mentioned. Sometimes if you’re trying to make a point, it helps to use facts to back up your claims.

You haven’t actually said anything about why someone would choose a physical server over the cloud other than you thought it was the right decision here. You also don’t define what RackConnect is.

So why would I want a physical server? Because it can connect to the cloud in your special hybrid setup? Makes great sense.

    I quote DS :

Please tell us when physical is better than cloud

I too was looking for answers here. We do most of our software testing in the cloud, but all our performance test we need to do on physical boxes. I would be interested in hearing more about hourly or yearly rate for physical systems.

I thought physical servers were compared to virtual servers, as both can be in the cloud, no? Isn’t the cloud a network of physical servers, some of which may be virtualized?
