Why Restaurant Meals – And Managed Clouds – Taste Better

Let’s be honest, food rarely tastes as good when you make it yourself at home as it does when it’s prepared in a restaurant by a professional chef. It’s one of the reasons that people go out to dinner. Of course, you can go to the market, buy all of the ingredients, prepare and cook the meal and then clean up. Or, you can go to a restaurant, order the same dish and have it made by a specialist who has made it hundreds, maybe thousands, of times.

I’m willing to bet that nine times out of 10, the chef’s meal will taste better, and that you’ll feel more relaxed when enjoying it. Even if you’re a decent cook at home, you don’t have the experience or expertise that comes from cooking for dozens, or hundreds, of customers. Instead, the provider points to a cookbook and says “have at it.” In this model, you’re expected to use the same tools and tactics as a professional chef, but without the training or the experience. And there’s no one to help you get started. You’re also not operating at the same scale as a professional, so many of the tools and utensils are not a perfect fit for you or the dish you want to prepare.

And then there’s the question of a team. To get the same level of quality and service at home that you would at a restaurant, you’ll have to assemble a team of specialists: a chef, prep cooks, line cooks, hosts, bussers and wait staff. To manage everything in your own cloud, including the complex tools and applications that run on top of it, you’ll have to assemble a similar team of specialists in system administration, network security, DevOps, data services, commerce platforms and more. And if you can find them, you must battle your competitors and pay a hefty premium to get them in the door. Remember, it takes more than a single person to manage and operate your cloud. Oh, and a number of them will require training too, which adds up. So you’re already spending a fortune finding, vetting, hiring and training this staff.

Once that’s all assembled, you’re still on the hook if something doesn’t work correctly, or the dish doesn’t come out quite how you wanted it. It’s on you to fix it. You’re on your own.
