What’s right for Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Web-based Tools or Desktop Software?

[2]The importance of having a website optimized for search engines cannot be underestimated. Web CEO[3] has been producing search engine optimization (SEO) software since 2000 and recently gathered fresh data over a two year period that showed 50% of the visitors of 300,000 websites consisted of unpaid (organic) traffic from search engines, mainly Google.

It is wasteful to spend a lot of money on pay-per-click (PPC) advertising via Google and other search engines, without at least spending a fair amount on optimizing a website for organic search engine traffic (conducting organic SEO).

Desktop SEO software has, for a long time, been the means with which webmasters could optimize and promote their sites. For instance, with Web CEO’s desktop addition (~800,000 downloads), webmasters could educate themselves about SEO, audit their sites for errors, build links, research keywords, check rankings, check for backlinks and backlink quality and get plenty of suggestions for optimizing their sites. All of the results could be mailed to oneself and others via configured reports.

However, a big disadvantage of using desktop software for SEO is that the analysis and the configurations for the reports emanate from only one person’s computer.

Let’s say a CEO spends a lot of time in Europe while a Marketing Director is in California and a Webmaster is in Montana. If all three of these people wish to collaborate in configuring tools and conducting SEO analysis, they will need to be able to logon a web-based program rather than duplicate efforts on three separate installations of desktop SEO software. As everyone knows, web-based services allow many people to work with each other remotely.

Web CEO Online was launched in January 2011 as a web-based SEO tool suite that will allow greater collaboration for website marketing and promotion teams. Web CEO Online is a set of web-based tools that will improve a website and then measure and track its performance.  The service can be used by individual website owners with one or two domain names or by SEO agencies that work to optimize thousands of sites.  Web CEO Online includes an easy-to-follow website improvement roadmap (eight different Working Plans including SEO, link building, social media optimization and promotion tasks and recommendations) and tools to complete the tasks such as the Keyword Research tool that uses the Google AdWords API, Search Engine Optimizer, tools to build backlinks and a Site Quality Auditor).

Technologically, Web CEO Online is fully cloud-based, which makes the application very flexible and robust.

The free version of the service will help anyone who has a single website with very few pages and only 5 keywords to optimize for. A $49 per month version will help a larger organization optimize up to 10 domains for 90 keywords. A $99 per month version (+ $2 per active URL per month) will help any SEO agency optimize an unlimited number of websites for an unlimited number of keywords.
