Think Private Clouds Are Only For The Enterprise? Think Again!

Businesses of all shapes and sizes leverage Rackspace Private Cloud (RPC) powered by OpenStack as a key component of their architecture. In a nutshell, RPC takes OpenStack code from trunk and configures it using our Chef recipes based on our experience and expertise in running large OpenStack-powered clouds.

The process begins with a full assessment of all technical requirements, architectural design services, and deployment. From there, you have two types of of support to choose from:

  1. The first is Escalation Support, which is similar to traditional software support. You can “phone a friend” for support, and we’ll walk through troubleshooting and see the issue through to resolution.
  2. The other is what we call Core Support, where we become the cloud operators so you can become experts in using the cloud—not running it.  In this model, Rackspace has remote access to the environment to handle all aspects of operating the cloud, including bug fixes, updates, upgrades and scaling of the environment.

When does a private cloud make sense for your business?

There are myriad vendors that market private clouds – both proprietary and open source – to the enterprise. Our customers, however, are not just large enterprises. They’re also small and medium businesses, and early and late stage startups. They run the gamut in use cases, from e-commerce, to next-gen software platforms, to big data and content delivery applications.

There are several reasons to opt for a private cloud over a public cloud. Here are some of the common themes:

  1. Security and Compliance – Due to the multi-tenant nature of public cloud, many of our customers are required to host in a private cloud. Rackspace Private Cloud gives you the ability to automate and enjoy the self-service aspect of public cloud in an environment that isn’t shared and where you have full visibility to all components that make up your cloud. We see this in private Object Storage environments, too, where our customers want to store sensitive data resiliently in an API-driven environment. Public cloud is not often an option for this type of data, which is typically governed by as regulatory body.  In addition, many of our customers grapple with data protection laws and must host data in specific countries where a public cloud may not be widely available. Rackspace Private Cloud is a great solution for those scenarios and offers you the choice of deploying your private cloud within a Rackspace data center, at a co-location facility, or within your own data center.
  2. Performance – In a private cloud, you have the ability and flexibility to create, define, and import your own image types and sizes and choose the hardware that best suits your use case. For some customers, this may mean SSD drives, cloud-optimized racks, or specialized storage arrays. Furthermore, some of our customers require their cloud environment have LAN speed connectivity to their dedicated resources to reduce latency and increase application performance.  Rackspace recently launched Performance Cloud Servers, which takes public cloud performance to an entirely new level, but private cloud is still most likely the answer if you need complete control over your hardware and infrastructure.
  3. Cost – Operating on a public cloud has many benefits, and undoubtedly one is the ability to pay for what you use. But if your base cloud workload is static, there’s a tipping point at which moving your workload to a private cloud makes financial sense. If you’re spending $5,000 on public cloud for static workloads, you should take a close look at the financials for a private cloud.  Many Rackspace Private Cloud customers have moved to a model where they own their base workloads in a private cloud and rent (burst) their workloads to our public cloud for the spikes.

Private clouds are great for net new (greenfield) projects, too, and you can get started with as few as three physical servers. Want to see if a private cloud makes sense for your business? Email us at: rpcsales@rackspace.com
