The New Year has greeted Rackspace with some great, green news. For the second consecutive year, Rackspace has been named an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partner and featured on the Top 30 Tech & Telecom List.
This week Rackspace was ranked No. 16 on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “Top 20 Tech & Telecom” list of “Green Power Partners” thanks to our purchase of renewable energy in 2012. (In 2011, we purchased 25 percent renewable energy worldwide and in 2012 we increased that amount to 30 percent.)
The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce has recognized the Rackspace Austin office for excellence in the “Environment” category of the 2012 Greater Austin Business Awards. We received the award, which was presented Thursday, August 30, for encouraging green behavior in the workplace and demonstrating commitment to environmental responsibility benefitting Rackers and the community.
This Thursday Rackspace is hosting its 4th annual Green Day to educate Rackers and the surrounding community about the latest in going green. This year’s Green Day will fall on Earth Day – April 22. Along with celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Rackspace will also be celebrating achieving the Castle’s LEED Gold Certification! The continuous recycling of the abandoned Windsor Park Mall into new and modern headquarters earned Rackspace the prestigious sustainable award.
Rackspace just completed its second ‘Green’ week. A year ago, Rackspace launched Greenspace, a proactive campaign to address the issues of power consumption and efficiency, carbon emissions, and general environmental responsibility.
Our Greenspace initiative is an umbrella for all of our environmental and efficiency programs at Rackspace and one of the key areas of focus within Greenspace is data center efficiency. In May of last year, I posted an article over on the Rack Labs blogabout Rackspace joining an industry consortium called The Green Grid. The Green Grid was launched in February 2007 and today has over 150 members. The primary mission of GG is to advance energy efficiency in data centers around the world and as Rackspace is a big believer in running efficient data centers, it made a lot of sense for us to participate in this forum. We joined the group as a contributing member in March of last year and we’re proud to be one of the few hosting companies on the membership roster.
