Twitter, undoubtedly, is one of the fastest growing social networking platforms on the web today. With Twitter’s open APIand its utilization of the OAuth protocol, developers are more easily able to create applications that will help Twitter users perform certain functions. Launching into the wild today from Articulate, an e-learning software shop, Screenr is the first easy-to-use screencasting tool on Twitter. The project is running on Cloud Sites and Cloud Files.
With Screenr, you can create screencasts for your followers just as easily as you send a tweet. It’s a web-based recorder, recordable on a Mac or a PC, that plays everywhere, including on iPhones. Once granting Screenr access to your Twitter account, you can view your screencast stream or view a public streamline. So you can check out the tool first hand, we’ve created a quick demo:
A long time Rackspace managed hosting customer, Adam Schwartz, CEO of Articulate, knew they would need a Cloud environment for Screenr.
“With user generated content (large file size screencasts), there’s no way to predict the volume, especially for an application that leverages Twitter. This is a perfect project for Cloud computing.”
I had the opportunity to speak with Adam about why he chose The Rackspace Cloud vs. Amazon for the launch of Screenr. He noted five distinct reasons:
“1- We have a history with Rackspace. Since 2002, Articulate has been a managed hosting customer. We’re comfortable with the service level and the fact that we’re able to get real people on the phone.
2- A sense of persistence which is extremely important (& comforting) in the event of a failure. This doesn’t exist at Amazon and that could be dangerous.
3- We run a .NET platform and, technically, we would not have been able to do what we need to on Amazon’s platform. The Rackspace Cloud is ahead of the curve when it comes to Windows computing.
4- Being on the Limelight Networks CDN is a huge advantage because they have servers distributed over 70 locations. We want users to be able to view screencasts from the closest location possible for a better experience.
5- And lastly, the price was very competitive. It was a no brainer at this point.”
We are thrilled to have another awesome Twitter application powered by The Rackspace Cloud. We see this as a new, innovative way for sharing information, especially demos. Follow us on Twitter – we plan to use this tool quite a bit!
