Rackspace would like to extend a warm Alamo City welcome to startup accelerator TechStars who is launching its first thematically focused program, TechStars Cloud. The inaugural TechStars Cloud program will run from January to April 2012 in San Antonio, Texas, and will be co-organized with Rackspace. The program will center around startups working exclusively on Cloud Computing, Cloud infrastructure, and OpenStack. TechStars Cloud is focused on selecting, investing in and mentoring the best technical and business talent building businesses that fall within the Cloud vertical.
The program will be managed by Jason Seats, Co-Founder of Slicehost which was acquired by Rackspace in 2008 and Nicole Glaros, currently the Managing Director of TechStars in Boulder. While hundreds of Cloud startups from around the globe will apply, approximately 10 companies will be selected to participate in the intense, immersive, 3 month accelerator program. The Rackspace Startup Program will provide a perk to all TechStars startups, which is a $2,000/month Rackspace Cloud hosting credit for a full year. The setting for TechStars Cloud will be the Weston Centre on the River Walk in downtown San Antonio.
At the end of the program these startups will present their business to investors, angels and venture capitalists. The goal is to solicit funding and support for product completion and launch. After the investor day, the participating startups will continue to benefit through the on-going support of the mentor relationships and TechStars alumni network. And we hope that at the culmination of the program, our TechStars Cloud startups will remain in San Antonio to finish their product launches.

Here’s what some of the TechStars Cloud mentors from Rackspace have to say:
“TechStars is one of America’s top accelerator programs. We are thrilled to have their newest office focused exclusively on Cloud startups right here in San Antonio, the home of Rackspace and the birthplace of Openstack, one of the world’s most popular open source Cloud projects.”
Graham Weston – Chairman, Rackspace Hosting
“Bringing TechStars Cloud is going to provide an amazing opportunity for the technical community of San Antonio. It will give them a chance to see how a world class accelerator operates, and better still get the opportunity to join up and work with the next generation of Cloud based startups.” Dirk Elmendorf – Founder, Rackspace Hosting
“Techstars coming to town adds to the foundation being built to attract, mentor, and grow more technology growth companies in San Antonio. When I think back to when we started Rackspace, I could have only wished for a program like Techstars to exist here. It’s a great resource for entrepreneurs and the city”
Pat Condon – Founder, Rackspace Hosting
“The idea of TechStars coming to San Antonio is a very cool. I grew up in San Antonio and I’m pumped to be a mentor for this program and look forward to many future tech companies being founded right here in SA. I’m so proud to have the #1 startup accelerator program here in our backyard.”
John Engates – Chief Technology Officer, Rackspace Hosting
“TechStars Cloud launching in San Antonio is just a phenomenal opportunity for our local tech community. I think we’ll be able to look back at this moment as the catalyst for building a permanent and significant culture of startups in the Alamo City.”
Jason Seats – Managing Director, TechStars Cloud · Slicehost Co-Founder
“To bring Cloud Computing startups to San Antonio—potentially establishing our city as a center of Cloud innovation—is hugely exciting. Think about it: The Cloud represents the next chapter in computing history and we’re only in the very early stages. We could have significant parts of that history written right here. Every major technology hub started with an established player or two combined with a growing network of grassroots innovation. You can look back on certain points in the history of San Francisco or Austin and say, ‘That was the Spark.’ The feeling I get from the members of the San Antonio tech scene is that this could be our tipping point.”
Todd Morey – Founder, Rackspace Cloud
“It is a real honor for me to give back and mentor startups for TechStars Cloud. When a profound movement happens you know it. Helping others to learn and think differently is that movement for all of us today. I believe this is great opportunity for Cloud Computing and San Antonio. It’s an awesome proving ground that mentorship is the new classroom for technology and education throughout Texas and the United States.”
