Rackspace Weekly Digest: Friday, September 28

Filed in Cloud Industry Insights by Andrew Hickey | September 28, 2012 9:48 am

Another week is in the books; and here at Rackspace it was another big one. In this edition of the Rackspace Weekly Digest we look at new SharePoint offerings and events; a customer that handled a heavy load; how cloud computing is green computing; and a new LinkedIn group for the open cloud – and much more.

Here’s all the info, in case you missed it:

Villy Custom Handles 3.2 Million Hits In 25 Minutes
An appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank prompted a  massive traffic spike on the web site of Rackspace Cloud Sites[1] customer and Rackspace Startup Program[2] member Villy Custom[3], in which the custom bicycle maker handled a monster 3.2 million hits in a mere 25 minutes[4].

Check Out SharePoint Tuesdays
Want to get SharePoint insight straight from Rackspace’s SharePoint MVPs? Tune into our SharePoint Tuesday events[5]: virtual Q&As held the third Tuesday of each month. Ask anything about SharePoint and our experts will have the answer. There are only three SharePoint Tuesdays left this year, and we’ve compiled all previous episodes for you to listen to or watch. The next one is October 16 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST. Register here[6].

The DevOps Blog Is Here
Developers looking for meaty technical content now have a one-stop shop with the new Rackspace DevOps blog[7], which comprises code snippets, sample code, best practices, infrastructure automation, software development kits (SDKs) and technical guidance from industry experts.

Join The Open Cloud On LinkedIn
Got a craving for all things open cloud? We recently launched a new LinkedIn group to bring together a community focused on the Rackspace open cloud[8]. Come on over and ask questions, post articles and share materials and resources.

SharePoint On The Open Cloud
Rackspace has launched two new SharePoint 2010 images in the Cloud Control Panel[9] that will make it easier and quicker for you to deploy SharePoint on the Rackspace open cloud.

Green Computing Takes Center Stage
With some recent confusion around energy consumption in data centers, Rackspace Director of Sustainability Melissa Gray this week outlined why cloud computing is green computing[10] and what Rackspace is doing to continually boost efficiency.

OpenStack Contributors Abound
This week saw the eighth and final (unless more OpenStack contributors want to participate) installment of our weekly blog series “How I Contribute To OpenStack[11].” The last installment featured insight from Nebula’s Gabriel Hurley[12] about why and how he contributes to the open source cloud project founded by Rackspace.
