Rackspace Startup Program Spotlight On Untappd: Socially Share, Explore The World Of Beer

Curious what craft brews your friends are drinking or where they’re hanging out? Untappd lets you socially share and explore the world of beer with friends. You can comment on and toast your friend’s beer selections, and receive beer recommendations based on what you and your friends have tried. You’ll have no reason to not try something new. As an additional encouragement, Untappd allows you to earn a number of cool badges for completing a variety of different criteria.

“Untappd is a social network that allows people to discover, rate and review beers, and it’s been coined by the community as the “Foursquare for Beer,” explains Greg Avola, CTO and co-founder of Untappd. “We started with the idea of pushing the ‘check-in’ network to the next level, but to focus on an industry that is very social, but never presented in an ‘online’ forum. It allows users to check-in their favorite beer, optionally add their location and share with their friends both within Untappd and on external social networks, living up to our motto, ‘Drink Socially.’”

Untappd also created a mobile app that allows you to socially share the brew you’re currently enjoying, as well as where you’re enjoying it, immediately from your smartphone.

“We started in September of 2010,” says Avola. “We launched the product to the public in October of the same year. Then we moved Untappd to the Rackspace Cloud when we entered into the Rackspace Startup Program. Since then we have accumulated over 450 thousand users that have checked-in over 22 million times.”

Avola says empowering people to connect socially over a cold brew in the essence of Untappd.

“We’re passionate about creating products that help people connect in new ways,” continues Avola. “We’ve been told by many users that Untappd has changed the way they select and drink beers and opened them to new brands and beer as well as created friendships around the world. On the other side, we’ve been told by breweries that this platform is a great way to connect themselves with consumers to get feedback on their beers. This is what drives us continue to build and improve Untappd.”

So, what can we expect from Untappd in the near future? Avola says growth for the app will come with better connections.

“We’re working on building improvements to Untappd to make checking in easier and better recommendations based on user location due to the distribution of beer,” concludes Avola. “We hope to better connect breweries and venues with their customers to better understand their demographics. And, we also hope to better connect consumers with their favorite breweries and venues to understand where to find their favorite brews all around the world.”
