RetailMLS is the first multiple listing service (MLS) dedicated exclusively to the retail real estate market. Based in New York City, the company has streamlined the process of marketing and searching for retail space by aggregating listings into an easy-to-use, standardized and low cost platform.
RetailMLS, a Rackspace Startup Program member, provides all retail professionals, including landlords, brokers and tenants, immediate access to the information they need to start negotiations and close deals faster.
Since its beta version, which focused primarily on New York City and the Tri-state region (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut), RetailMLS has launched and expanded. The latest release adds listings in the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest and California. User feedback and the fact that other national firms would be listing properties nationwide motivated the RetailMLS team to expand, allowing the company to stake its claim across the country as soon as possible.
Ben Zises, founder and CEO of RetailMLS, began his career in real estate as a licensed salesperson working on residential, commercial and retail brokerage transactions. Soon thereafter, he moved into a more specialized role with one of New York City’s most highly regarded retail brokerage firms – Mogull Realty. There, Ben identified opportunities and negotiated lease transactions with various high-profile landlords and tenants including the Rockefeller Group Development Corp., Verizon Wireless, Gansevoort Hotel Group and The Trump Organization.
“RetailMLS was conceived after I began working as a retail real estate broker in NYC in 2009,” explains Zises. “I realized there was no listings website just for retail and decided to create a solution to the problem. RetailMLS started as a side project four years ago. It was clear, however, that it was worthy of full-time attention and we have been working on it in that capacity since August 2011.”
“Users can search for properties based on specific criteria, such as minimum street frontage, number of parking spaces, level of pedestrian traffic and features like kitchens,” says Zises. “We are passionate about creating a more efficient process for marketing and searching for retail real estate. Our goal is to help businesses find the perfect retail space and landlords find the perfect retail tenant.”
Standard listings on RetailMLS are free, while featured listings run between $49 and $249, depending on region and market. A subscription to RetailPRO runs $199 monthly, which allows users an enhanced search with demographic overlays, alerts for listing changes and the ability to save property searches.
“We are also consumed with developing a lightning fast application that provides retail professionals with all the information and tools they need to help them close deals faster,” concludes Zises. “Our goals for 2013 are to continue improving our application while informing the public and customers about our application and all that is has to offer. Simple tasks like creating a flyer for a retail space used to take hours. We’ve built custom features like creating custom flyers that can be done in minutes.”
