Forecast is the latest app from Hurricane Party, Inc., formed in May of 2010 in Austin, Texas. Hurricane Party was one of only five companies selected that year from a pool of several hundred for Capital Factory’s prestigious seed accelerator. At SXSW 2011 theapp was launched. It was in that same timeframe that the Rackspace Startup Program was launching as well.
Hurricane Party’s follow up app, Forecast, is a fun and simple way for friends to share where they’re going or create your own forecast to share where you’ll be later in the day. You have the ability to queue up multiple forecasts and then check-in with one touch when you arrive. Whether you’re going out for coffee or a wild night on the town, Forecast helps you connect with your real friends out in the real world. It’s social networking that’s actually social.
“A check-in tells your friends where you are now. A forecast tells friends where you will be later. This simple change from present tense to future tense changes everything. It’s the difference between a serendipitous connection and a missed opportunity.” Says Eric Katerman, Technical Co-founder of Forecast. “We are all passionate about facilitating spontaneous meet-ups between friends.”
The Forecast team is in the process of developing an android app and plan to release it in early August. “Eventually we’d like to be on more platforms but have no immediate plans to move beyond android and iPhone,” says Eric. “All the cool kids have open APIs. We want to be cool but unfortunately we’re not. At least not yet. We think it would be awesome to have an open API for developers to build an eco-system of apps around the forecast in the same way a thriving eco-system has been built around the check in.”
Katerman goes on to say, “Our users love the simplicity of the app, and many have reported spontaneous meetings with friends that happened as a consequence of using Forecast. We are starting to experiment with various business models, and in 2012 we would like to have hundreds of thousands of users using Forecast across the world and we’d like to be making some revenue.”
The Rackspace Startup Program team could use the Forecast app to facilitate serendipitous connections and avoid missed opportunities within the startup community. We congratulate Hurricane Party, Inc on its drive to create apps that make social networking actually social. And we are thrilled to have helped both the Hurricane Party and Forecast apps come to fruition.
