If you read Mike Mayo’s latest post about developing for the iPad, you’ll know that we have been patiently waiting for the release of the iPad. Our app was actually approved prior to the official release of the iPad making us the first Cloud Provider with an app on the iPad. Mike Mayo patiently waited in line to be one of the first to purchase the iPad so he could quickly test out the Rackspace Cloud Pro app. At the same store, Robert Scoble had the opportunity to interview Mike Mayo:
With this app, users can turn on backups for a server, create new servers from backups, manage back-up scheduling, re-boot, rename, resize and delete servers all using the iPad’s intuitive touchscreen interface. Here’s a list of the coolest features:
1. You can slide out a panel on the login screen that displays the current system status of the Rackspace Cloud as a whole, as well as the US and UK fanatical support phone numbers.
2. Manage your backup schedules for Cloud Servers. Turn on backups for a server, create new servers from that backup, thus effectively cloning your servers as many times as you want.
3. If you tap your public IP address for a Cloud Server, you can choose to ping that IP address and see how responsive your server is from 41 different locations around the world.

As a former customer, Mike Mayo has taken advantage of our API’s. He developed his first iPhone app for Slicehost while sitting in Peet’s coffee shop and since then, he has moved on to develop the Rackspace Cloud app for the iPhone and now iPad.
“It’s amazing to think that racks of servers in corporations once managed by entire IT teams can now be handled by one person with the touch of a finger using an iPad tablet from anywhere. As a former customer and now a Racker myself, I believe the mobility and functionality made possible by the Apple iPad and The Rackspace Cloud has the potential to transform the way business applications are managed.”
Mike, now an official Racker, is working on the Android app and will continue to build open source software for the Rackspace Cloud. We’ll be hosting a webinar where Mike will be doing a live demonstration of the Rackspace Cloud iPad App. Here are the details:
