Rackspace Cloud Files Keeps Momentum on CDN Migrations
Rackspace is proud to announce that all new Cloud Files CDN customers will now leverage Akamai’s content delivery network. That means that anyone who signs up today from either the US or UK site can immediately take advantage of Akamai. Earlier this month, we announced our partnership with Akamai Technologies, Inc., the industry’s leader in Content Distribution Networks. Since that time, we have migrated both our London and Chicago datacenters, and will soon complete the final transition in Dallas.
This means that all new customers, both in the US and the UK will now have their content distributed over Akamai’s 73,000 servers, located in 71 countries, across more than 1000 networks! For additional details, see Akamai’s facts and figures. As promised, customers that transitioned have experienced no downtime and have not needed to change any code to experience the Akamai network!
We will spend the next few weeks migrating remaining current CDN customers to Akamai and will begin releasing new features as soon as everyone has been moved. As you remember, we’re planning to deliver the following…

My Cloud Files account was migrated to Akamai but my expectations were greatly disappointed. I’m currently experiencing serious problems with embedding videos using the HTML5 video tag. Some browsers just hangs or crash. Those same videos used to play smoothly over the Limelight CDN. I’m still investigating the issue but I suspect it has to do with prefetching of metadata by requesting partial-content over HTTP. I’m currently switching back to Amazon Cloud Front wich works fine with the exact same files.

I’m also trying to host MP4 and WEBM videos on CloudFiles but am having trouble with it not playing in Chrome. The Chrome network inspector indicates a get request for my video is pending but never begins. This but mentions that Rackspace is sending headers which may be confusing to Chrome. Has anyone looked in to this further? Is this a known issue?

I believe that wasn’t a Chrome issue because the exact same video files worked just fine when served from CloudFront.
However, it seams that all problem I had serving embedded video files (WEBM and MP4/H264) are now solved.
A problem still exists with ogg files and mozilla because a X-Content-Duration header should be added since ogg doesn’t support metadata and Cloud Files doesn’t allow that header to be added at the moment.
