Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Now Available On Cloud Servers

We have been getting tons of requests from developers and DBAs about SQL Server 2012 (previously known as “Denali”). Today we are pleased to announce the availability of Microsoft SQL Server 2012, in Web and Standard Editions, on the Rackspace Cloud. We are making this available in Cloud Servers, including Cloud Servers with a Managed Service Level.

This is the latest installment of Microsoft’s popular database and it includes a number of improvements over previous versions. I am particularly looking forward to exploring the improvements to AlwaysOn for higher availability, Contained Databases to improve on some of the authentication challenges associated with moving databases and FileTables for those apps that manage unstructured data that lives as files outside of the database. You probably have your own favorites, but if you don’t have them yet then check out MSDN, especially the SQL Server 2012 “General Information[1]” page, the “What’s new[2]” page and the “Edition Comparison[3]” page.

As with other licensed software available on Cloud Servers, you pay a simple hourly rate that includes both the underlying compute instance as well as use of all required licensed software. SQL Server 2012 pricing is below and it includes the cost of the Cloud Server instance and the Windows and SQL Server charges. These prices are unchanged from SQL Server 2008 R2 which, by the way, will continue to be available on Cloud Servers.

Please note that we are making SQL Server 2012 available in our first generation Cloud Servers. We are working to make this available as part of the next generation Cloud Servers powered by OpenStack in the near future.

Also, as I mentioned above, this launch applies only to Cloud Servers. If you are interested in deploying SQL Server 2012 in a dedicated environment instead, at this time we can only provide you with licensing and installation services covered by our beta terms. We are working hard to provide you with a fully supported SQL Server 2012 service in the near future as part of our managed hosting services. If you want to start using SQL Server 2012 in a dedicated environment for those new apps you are building, or for app migrations you are thinking of, or simply to kick the tires and check out the new improvements in SQL Server Management Studio and T-SQL, then go ahead and give us a call at 1-800-961-2888 or reach out to your account team.

We are really looking forward to seeing your existing apps migrated to SQL Server 2012 Standard and Web Editions, and hope that you can take advantage of these improvements for your new applications.

UPDATE

We have also made Microsoft SQL Server 2012 available on Cloud Sites. Microsoft SQL Server 2012 is available to Cloud Sites customers at no additional cost.
