Lew Moorman Talks Cloud at Structure 2010

Rackspace attended Gigaom’s 3rd annual Structure event[1] held in San Francisco a few weeks ago. The conference is focused on cloud computing[2] and this year’s headline was, “Put Cloud Computing to Work.”

Lew Moorman[3] had the opportunity to speak onstage in a fireside chat with Om Malik[4]. Lew discusses how hosting has evolved over the last 10 years and what the role of cloud computing is in the IT world today. He goes on to discuss what companies are moving to the cloud and for what reasons. For building something new, companies are building it in the cloud. For legacy applications, companies are challenged with the question, “how do I make that switch?,” and with that challenge comes time before these legacy applications will move to the cloud – within the next decade Lew predicts. The biggest opportunity Lew sees for start ups is to address the challenge of helping businesses move onto the cloud. How can they make the cloud run more efficient for them and make cloud a seamless part of a company’s IT operations?
