Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida On The Rackspace Cloud

1

“According to the Florida Association of Pediatric Tumor Programs (FAPTP), the third largest percentage of all children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida resides in Palm Beach County and yet we have no cancer outpatient treatment center for them.”

This is a startling statistic I came across on KidsCancerSF.org, hosted on the Rackspace Cloud. The Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida is a local 501(c)(3) charity that raises funding to provide supportive care services to children with cancer and/or blood disorders. Long term, their goal is to fund a comprehensive regional pediatric outpatient center to provide centralized, coordinated medical and supportive care services for these children and their families. Traveling great distances and waiting at hospitals for cancer treatments serves as a huge threat to children with cancer as they already have a severely weakened immune system. It’s hard to imagine what can happen to these children until you hear Courtney’s story. Courtney, only 13 years old, is undergoing treatment for Leukemia. She had a friend, Jocelyn Davis, who was waiting to receive a bone marrow transplant and had to wait in a hospital to receive the transplant. Before she received that transplant, she passed away from the H1N1 virus. When Courtney discovered the news, she was determined to help prevent this from happening to other children in the future and to do this, an outpatient center is needed. Here’s her interview done in December 2009. It’s truly moving.

Why They Chose The Rackspace Cloud

KidsCancerSF.org is a destination where children with cancer families can visit to find more information about their services and also serves as a resource for the community to learn more about how you can volunteer and/or donate. The availability of the site is very important. Zack Doherty manages the web development and system administration for KidsCancerSF.org. When he started working on their site, he originally had it set up at MediaTemple. Zack, a Python developer, found the MediaTemple platform too restrictive for the tasks he needed to perform. The most frustrating issue Zack had was having the site crash under high load – right when they would receive traffic from a news article or other press. He needed a bare bones solution where he could start from scratch and install what he needed which is why he chose Rackspace Cloud Servers.

“When I first got my Rackspace Cloud server setup, it was like Christmas morning. It was finally a platform where I could really optimize the server to do exactly what I needed to do: serve Python powered websites reliably and quickly. For around only $20/month, I’ve got a Cloud server that has double the RAM of my server with Media Temple and burstable CPU resources. It can comfortably handle 500 concurrent connections without anyone noticing a significant degradation of loading times, not only that but absolutely none of those requests fail.”

Zack has had his shared of experiences with dedicated hosting providers. He initially made the switch to cloud computing for the “ability to go from 0 to 60 in no time.” He likes the fact that he can scale servers up and down in a matter of minutes and pay only for what is used. Though he is fascinated with our Cloud Servers platform, he is most impressed with our support team.

“Rackspace also advertises “Fanatical Customer Support.” That is… a galactic understatement. The CSR’s are always available, I don’t have to wait two days to find out what the name-servers are and I get an answer within seconds. They’re knowledgeable, friendly, outgoing and, like I said, very quick to respond. No other server provider I’ve been with even comes close to giving the same level of support.”

At Rackspace as an organization, we are not only committed to our customers but to our community through our Rack Gives Back Program. It gives us great pleasure to host KidsCancerSF.org on The Rackspace Cloud because it supports a cause we all believe in and support.
