[INFOGRAPHIC] Data Storage 101

4

According to Gartner in 2010, 47% of enterprise survey respondents ranked data growth in their top three challenges. The steady growth in the pace of file creation and systems to save all of those files shows no hint of a slowdown.

In 1986, only 1% of data was stored digitally. In 2007, it was 94%. Enterprises are storing 7 exabytes of data and consumers, 6 exabytes. And while individuals generate 75% of the information in the digital universe, enterprises have some liability for 80% of information in the digital universe at some point in its digital life.

Take a look at this infographic that illustrates some interesting statistics about data growth and how it’s being stored. We also define the various technologies you can use for data storage from cloud to dedicated. Hopefully it gets you thinking about what you or your company is doing when it comes to data storage.

It’s really a good study of our related market. Most users don’t ask while registering with dedicated server provider or server collocation provider. It will help lots of users and let them to know what to do and ask.

On what planet did the 235TB for the Library of Congress come from? That stat is so far off, it discredits an other stat in the info graph. On a average month the Library of Congress (LC) receive, creates or captures this much data. The LC has over 2.5PB of spinning disk (SAN and NAS), over 5PB of tape archive (with space for 15PB) and 1PB of DAS (USB drives, CD, DVD, tape and other mediums).

Hi Carl – I apologize for any misinformation. We actually took that stat from here: http://www.loc.gov/webarchiving/faq.html#faqs_05 “And now that I am reading the entire FAQ, I realize it is only referring to their website archive. We will update the infographic to reflect the correct information. Again, I apologize for the incorrect stat and appreciate you bringing it to our attention.
Best,
Angela
