Tealet is a Rackspace-powered startup that connects independent tea farmers with tea lovers. The e-retailer works directly with close to 25 tea growers in nine different countries to sell their products directly to the market. Customers can purchase tea online in individual packets, or they can subscribe to a service that will send four different types of teas to their doorstep every other month.
Today at SXSW Interactive, we talked to the team of entrepreneurs from Tealet about their business and how they prepare for growth.
Elyse Petersen, who founded Tealet nine months ago, said the company’s focus is to tell the story of the grower and to emphasize the origin of the tea, which is produced in Hawaii, Japan, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Sri Lanka, Nepal and South Korea. Her team travels across the world to personally document and share the story of each grower.
“It’s really about having fun and creating an authentic connection” between the buyer and the seller, she said.
Tealet New Media Director Michael Petersen said the company has plans to expand into the wholesale market. Rackspace’s ability to scale the Tealet website based on its expanding business needs makes it easy for Tealet to grow without worrying about website maintenance, he added.
“We want to provide tools to the growers and shop owners to make better decisions,” Michael said. “With Rackspace, we know we can keep on building” our online presence.
