China, Hong Kong OpenStack User Meetup Draws Collaboration-Hungry Crowd

As a prelude to this week’s OpenStack Summit Hong Kong, the China and Hong Kong OpenStack User Groups got together to talk all things OpenStack and hear from cloud experts from around the globe.

The event drew nearly 200 OpenStack users to Hong Kong’s Cyberport to get the download of the state of OpenStack on an international scale.

Check out this video from the meetup, shot and edited by Rackspace Video Storyteller and Producer Dave Sims:

According to Cheng Hui, a Board Director of the OpenStack Foundation, OpenStack is seeing tremendous growth in China and Hong Kong. Currently, the China OpenStack User Group (COSUG) has thousands of members and represents the largest user group in the world. There are 2,200 OpenStack foundation members from China, Hui said, which represents about 20 percent of global membership. And in a survey, Hui said, he found that OpenStack in China currently has 410 users from 350 companies.

The large turnout at the China and Hong Kong OpenStack User Group meetup is an illustration that OpenStack is truly a global platform, said Rackspace Senior Vice President Jim Curry. According to Curry, it’s often not appreciated enough how global OpenStack is, and has been from the start.

Curry said OpenStack is sparking collaboration around the world, and the OpenStack Summit and the user group meetings spreading to a wider international audience show that it is gaining greater global momentum.

Rackspace CTO John Engates, who spoke on a panel at the event, said the collaborative nature of OpenStack helps fuel its global evolution. He said OpenStack creates a many-to-many relationship, not many-to-one. OpenStack empowers all members and participants to add value and play to their strengths, and the global community benefits.
