This is a guest post written and contributed by Lance Albertson, director of the Oregon State University Open Source Lab. This week, Rackspace Training for OpenStack is teaching an OpenStack Fundamentals course at OSU.
Our mission at the Oregon State University Open Source Lab is to advance open source technologies. Recently, one such technology – OpenStack – has experienced massive growth and has generated a great deal of attention. To become more knowledgeable and increase our skills with OpenStack, we’ve connected with Rackspace Training for OpenStack to come to the OSU campus and teach us the fundamentals.
At the OSU OSL, we provide hosting for more than 160 projects, including the Apache Software Foundation, the Linux Foundation and Drupal. Our hosted sites deliver roughly 430 terabytes of information each month to people around the globe. As we strive to stay on the cutting edge of open source technology, we continually investigate new projects and technology.
OpenStack is such a large project and is making such an impact on the open source community, that we invited Rackspace Training for OpenStack to give us hands-on experience with OpenStack through the OpenStack Fundamentals course. OpenStack contains a lot of components, and this course on the fundamentals will show our students how everything ties together. The four-night training sessions will teach students how to properly design, deploy and operate a cloud at scale using OpenStack, the open source cloud software that Rackspace co-founded.
The ability to have hands-on interaction with new cloud servers will enable our students to discover new aspects of cloud computing they can then apply to projects in our lab. There’s always an element of “wow, I never even thought of that.”
It’s obvious that cloud computing is here to stay and OpenStack will have a strong place in the market. We’re excited to dig in and get more exposure to OpenStack.
Oregon State University is one of a number of stops Rackspace Training for OpenStack is making at universities this fall. If your college, university or research organization is interested in learning the ins and outs of OpenStack, please get in touch with us at training.rackspace.com/academia. We plan to add more seminars in coming months.
