As we do every month, we came together at the June company lunch to celebrate another month of successes, birthdays, competition winners, and the “Impact of the Month” award. It’s always a struggle to choose the one person that we feel made the biggest impact. This month was no exception. After all, we went through a massive rebranding and there were dozens and dozens of people throughout the organization that made our rebranding an amazing success.

However, one person stood out. Steve Piercy is the lead developer of the website team here at Rackspace Email & Apps, and had the single largest responsibility during the rebranding process. Steve and his team had to rewrite the website from scratch. The entire website had to be completely overhauled, from the look and feel of the site, all the way down to the backend code base, in order to fit seamlessly with the Rackspace website. Steve, backed by a dedicated team of developers, designers, illustrators, project managers, and QA testers worked extremely long hours to meet tight deadlines without compromising an iota of quality. You’re looking at the result – our most successful rebranding effort to date (yes, we’ve had a few).

Noteworthy Webmail Mobile is a simple and easy to use way to access email, calendar, and contacts on your mobile device from Noteworthy. The best part is the app works on any mobile device that supports a connection to the internet. It was actually designed to work on flip phones!
In order to make your data more accessible, we added the ability to search your contacts and company directory directly from the mobile interface. Just type in the name of the person you’re searching for and on the results page choose the Contacts or Company Directory link. If you have a phone number associated with the entry, you’ll just click on it and your phone starts dialing. Now, you can reach your contacts anywhere and everywhere.

Which of the following companies use open source software for vital business functions?
a) Mailtrust
b) Microsoft
c) Google
d) NYSE Euronext
e) All of the Above
Answer: E) All of the above. Are you surprised? More and more companies are harnessing the flexibility and possibilities of open source software development. Open source refers to software with a publicly accessible source code that programmers can modify to their purposes. Mailtrust uses open source – a lot. We believe in the idea and like the ability to modify software to suit our needs. We use Linux, MySQL, Dovecot, Postfix, Funambol, Hadoop, and Zookeeper for a variety of functions from mobile sync to search. We contribute back to the open source projects where we can by reporting bugs, enhancing the code, and by encouraging others to use this free software.
But we want to do more to support the growth of the open source community. What more you ask? Well, for starters, we hosted an Open Source Round Table to keep the conversation going locally in Blacksburg, VA. By creating a forum for those who are passionate about open source software, we’re contributing to the future growth of open source projects and creating a place for developers and other interested parties to share and learn from each other. The free pizza was an added bonus! We’ve also added open source pioneer, Timo Sirainen, creator and lead developer for Dovecot, the highest performing open-source IMAP server for Linux/Unix, to the Mailtrust team.
If you’ve never used open source software, now is the perfect time to start. Just search online for software that interests you, check out the project’s website, download the software and use it for free, and if you’re really brave you can download the source code and start hacking!
