Mosso Press Release

The Rackspace Cloud Announces Public API for Cloud Servers

Expands Power of the Cloud, Offering More Control and Flexibility and Automation Features Including Mobile Management of Cloud with New iPhone Application

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rackspace® Hosting’s (NYSE:RAX), the world’s leader in hosting, today announced the availability of the public beta of its Cloud Servers® API. Cloud Servers, part of the company’s portfolio of cloud services, is a leading Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering that provides inexpensive compute capacity that can be instantly sized allowing businesses to pay only for what it uses—as needed. Through the open, standards-based API, Rackspace Cloud customers can now manage their cloud infrastructure with greater control and flexibility. The API, for example, enables elastic scenarios as users can write code that programmatically detects load and scales the number of server instances up and down.

The Rackspace Cloud solicited feedback and conducted intensive testing with its partners and cloud developers to help ensure that the community shaped the API. With today’s announcement, users now have control panel and programmatic access to the company’s cloud infrastructure services: Cloud Servers, Cloud Files and Slicehost.

The Cloud Servers API will introduce four new features including:

Server Metadata– Supply server-specific metadata when an instance is created that can be accessed via the API.

Server Data Injection– Specify files when instance is created that will be injected into the server file system before startup. This is useful, for example, when inserting SSH keys, setting configuration files, or storing data that you want to retrieve from within the Cloud Server itself.

Host Identification– The Cloud Servers provisioning algorithm has an anti-affinity property that attempts to spread out customer VMs across hosts. Under certain situations, Cloud Servers from the same customer may be placed on the same host. Host identification allows you to programmatically detect this condition and take appropriate action.

Shared IP Groups– While Rackspace has always supported shared IPs, it’s been made simpler with the creation of Shared IP Groups and the ability to enable high availability configurations.

Rackspace Cloud customers will be able to manage their Cloud Servers or Cloud Files accounts anytime, anywhere on their iPhones thanks to an application built off the APIs by developer Michael Mayo. The application is expected to be available in the App Store within a month.

“It’s been a great experience to collaborate with the Rackspace Cloud team on the development of the Cloud Servers API,” stated Michael Mayo, iPhone application developer. “Working together with the Rackspace team enabled me to develop my application much more quickly. I’m very pleased with the open feedback process as it makes my work a lot easier.”

With the API, developers can create applications for the Rackspace Cloud which can automatically access compute power as required. The Cloud Servers API also allows developers to work with partners on pre-built applications.

“After testing, it is apparent the Cloud Servers API was created to meet the needs of the community,” said David Day, CTO, Zeus Technology. “The REST API has a complete feature set and is easy to use. We are excited to be building on such a robust platform.”

“With the launch of our API, we’re looking forward to working with our partners and the developer community to create a powerful cloud ecosystem which we believe will generate new tools and applications to make cloud hosting even easier and more efficient,” said Emil Sayegh, General Manager, The Rackspace Cloud. “We see programmatic control as essential for igniting an ecosystem around the Rackspace Cloud. It’s a key tool for generating the ‘next big thing’ in cloud because it gives developers the power and control to bring their great ideas to fruition.”

The Cloud Servers API is implemented using a RESTful web service interface. Aiming to build a cohesive approach to all products in the Rackspace Cloud suite, Cloud Servers shares a common token authentication system that allows seamless access between products and services.

Launched earlier this year, Cloud Servers is a compute service that provides server capacity in the cloud to businesses of all sizes and leverages key technology developed by Slicehost, LLC, a Rackspace wholly-owned subsidiary. Until today, interactions with Cloud Servers only occurred via the Rackspace Cloud Control Panel (GUI) and now programmatically via the Cloud Servers API.

Mosso Press Release

The Rackspace Cloud Goes Open Source with APIs

Company Fostering Foundation for Open Clouds and Cross Cloud Interoperability; Empowers Cloud Development Community

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In a major advancement of its open cloud strategy, Rackspace® Hosting (NYSE:RAX), the world’s leader in hosting, today announced it has open sourced the specifications for its Cloud Servers and Cloud Files™ APIs under the Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution license. Developers are now free to copy, implement, and modify the specifications, helping to enable a truly open cloud.

The Rackspace Cloud™ worked directly with developers in an open community to create the specifications and has now released them through Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 2001, that promotes the creative re-use of intellectual and artistic works, whether owned or in the public domain through its free copyright licenses.

“We welcome Rackspace’s decision to provide their client-side tools as open source to the community,” stated Rich Wolski, Chief Technology Officer, Eucalyptus Systems Inc. “It builds confidence among developers to know they can ‘see’ how the APIs function at a programmatic level. Moreover, by providing their API tools as open source, Rackspace is assuming a leadership position in helping to achieve cloud interoperability.”

As part of its ongoing vision to open the cloud and speed cloud development, the company has also made available its Cloud Files language bindings for Java, PHP, Python, C#, and Ruby under the MIT license. The source code for these bindings is publicly available on GitHub, a public software versioning system, at http://github.com/rackspace, where external developers can now contribute. Rackspace has also produced a technical guideline for Cloud Servers language bindings which is also available on GitHub. This guideline will enable developers to build Cloud Servers bindings in a variety of languages, but with a consistent design and feel. Rackspace expects to offer a reference implementation in Python soon and is aware of Ruby, Perl, Java, and Twisted Python Cloud Servers bindings that are in the process of being developed.

Rackspace’s commitment to openness extends to its work with the community and expects to continue to expand the range of language bindings as developers provide them and work with developers to help ensure they are notified quickly of new features and updated technical specifications.

“It’s great to see Rackspace push the movement forward by getting more code into the hands of the community,” stated, Alex Polvi, CEO, Cloudkick, a leading cloud management platform developer. “We are thrilled to see the company moving so quickly and proactively to promote an open cloud.”

“Rackspace is committed to the development of open cloud solutions and standards. We are working quickly to offer a wide range of tools to help developers work with us to create these important building blocks for the cloud industry,” said Emil Sayegh, General Manager, The Rackspace Cloud. “Rackspace is dedicated to bringing a coordinated effort to cloud development. We are working directly with our ecosystem of developers and the broader industry to share what we create with the open source community. We believe open source APIs are an enabling factor in making interoperable non-proprietary cloud solutions a reality.”

Radio Flyer Chooses The Rackspace Cloud for Sky High Scalability

New Comprehensive Photo Sharing Service for Twitter and Facebook Requires Highly Scalable Cloud Hosting Architecture and Storage to Support Unpredictable Traffic Spikes

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rackspace® Hosting’s (NYSE:RAX), the world’s leader in hosting, today announced that Radio Flyer, the 92-year-old company famous for the little red wagon for children, has chosen Cloud Sites™ from Mosso | The Rackspace Cloud, to power the company’s corporate site, RadioFlyer.com. Radio Flyer’s decision to move the site to the highly scalable Cloud Sites platform was spurred by the company’s future marketing initiatives to connect more creatively with customers through interactive online marketing activities which are intended to drive traffic to the site and support the future growth of the business.

“When the time came for Radio Flyer to make the transition into the cloud, we needed a solution that offered the support and scalability to propel us to the next level,” said Tom Cesario, director of information technology for Radio Flyer. “Our business is growing and we’re reaching out to customers in new ways that will bring them to our site. We believe a cloud approach is the best path for us in order to support unpredictable traffic spikes and the customer service provided by Rackspace has been superb – allowing us to focus on strategic business issues and not technology issues.”

“Radio Flyer initially tapped The Rackspace Cloud to host its extranet for its sales representatives and career site, but has expanded its use of the solution to support its business strategy which will entail more interactive marketing to customers moving forward. The Radio Flyer website resides on Cloud Sites (from the Rackspace Cloud portfolio), a full-service cloud hosting platform which delivers automatic scaling to handle large usage spikes experienced by high-traffic, fast growth websites. With a large presence in the United States and 22 countries internationally, the Radio Flyer site needs to properly scale — especially during the busy summertime and holiday seasons.

“Key factors in our choice of Cloud Sites were the convenient and cost-effective pay-per-use model, load balancing, and high availability (HA) capabilities. As we migrated our corporate site, sales extranet and career site to The Rackspace Cloud, the ability of the service to support multiple platforms simultaneously was also a significant driver in our decision to move to Cloud Sites.
Rackspace Hosting Appoints Lew Moorman President of Cloud Business

Lew Moorman also to provide insights on cloud technology at the Web 2.0 Expo in New York City

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rackspace® Hosting’s (NYSE:RAX) today announced the naming of Chief Strategy Officer Lew Moorman as President of the company’s cloud business. In his new role, Moorman is responsible for bringing Fanatical Support® to Rackspace’s efforts into their cloud hosting model that meets customer needs and maintains Rackspace’s hosting market leadership.

As the CSO of Rackspace, Moorman’s responsibilities have included the development, marketing and management of new products and services. Most recently, Moorman has focused on the company’s entrance into both the cloud hosting and cloud applications spaces by spearheading the launch of The Rackspace Cloud (formerly Mosso) and driving the acquisitions of webmail.us, now the backbone of Rackspace’s Cloud Applications division, and, more recently, Slicehost and Jungle Disk. He has helped pave the way for Rackspace to emerge as a leader in cloud computing.

“As our CSO, Lew helped guide Rackspace into many new territories, most notably cloud computing,” said Lanham Napier, president and CEO, Rackspace Hosting. “He is able to visualize the future for both our customers and our company. Cloud hosting and cloud applications are extremely important to us and that is why we’re putting Lew at the helm of these two strategic businesses.”

In October 2008, Rackspace announced its cloud hosting strategy at the Rackspace Cloud Event. Since the event and the acquisitions of Slicehost and Jungle Disk, the Cloud Business has seen momentum with several new product launches and integrations, customer acquisitions and additions to its leadership team.

Rackspace’s cloud business consists of two divisions, Cloud Hosting, also known as Mosso | The Rackspace Cloud, and Cloud Applications. Led by Emil Sayegh, General Manager, The Rackspace Cloud is the company’s fastest growing division, hosting hundreds of thousands of websites and applications for over 16,000 customers. The Rackspace Cloud provides on-demand scalable website, application and storage hosting through its suite of cloud solutions – Cloud Sites™, Cloud Files™ and Cloud Servers™. At the core of the Cloud Application division is Mailtrust, led by Pat Mathews, General Manager and Founder. Mailtrust is home to over one million mailboxes and provides email and communication services allowing companies to focus on their core business strategies.

“Cloud computing is the next step for business hosting and brings a whole new set of challenges and opportunities for Rackspace. Our investments in these new technologies have yielded strong results and we think the future model of hybrid hosting, the use of traditional hosting and cloud computing along with our trademark Fanatical Support will be a great combination for our customers” said Moorman. “I am privileged to lead incredible teams in this important endeavor for Rackspace.”

Prior to joining Rackspace in 2000, Moorman held several positions at the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, advising a variety of technology firms. Moorman holds a B.A. from Duke University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Moorman is speaking at this week’s Web 2.0 Expo in New York City on the topic of cloud computing. He will be participating in two speaking sessions on April 2, the first is a panel discussion titled “Cloud Operations is The New Killer Job” from 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. PT and the other session is “Cloud Computing and the Paradigm Shift That’s Coming in IT” held from 3:50 – 4:40 p.m. PT.

Mosso Press Release

Rackspace Strategy Shift Unveils New Corporate Identity

Rackspace Emphasizes Brand’s Focus on Delivering Hosted IT Services with Fanatical Support

SAN ANTONIO – January 22, 2008 – Rackspace® today announced its new corporate identity reflecting its shift into IT hosting, transforming traditional IT functions into consumable services via the web. As more enterprises transition from purchasing in-house computing assets to leveraging service providers, Rackspace now offers a suite of hosted IT services that are more reliable and provide better value, including virtualization, hosted mail, custom application support, back-end IT and storage.

"Rackspace has been focused on Fanatical Support® since the beginning—it’s in our DNA—and our new identity reflects that," said Lanham Napier, president and CEO, Rackspace. "Now we see the industry shifting to a service-based paradigm. Fanatical Support has been the key to our managed hosting success for the past nine years and will continue to propel us as we embark upon this new era of IT hosting."

The newly-launched name, “Rackspace”, drops the “Managed Hosting” terminology, signifying Rackspace’s new breadth of hosted services supporting companies of all sizes. In addition to Rackspace’s traditional managed hosting offering, its venture companies also complement the new strategy. They include:
– Mosso®, the Rackspace cloud computing brand
– Mailtrust™, the Rackspace business-class hosted email brand

The new logo incorporates Rackspace’s popular "FANATIGUY™" icon, which better reflects Rackspace’s people-centric culture and award-winning Fanatical Support. It also highlights the company’s transition from servers to services. Rackspace is moving beyond the historical hardware focus of the web hosting industry and towards a services strategy, assembling the best technologies in the industry and delivering them as a service. Fanatical Support has always been the key differentiator for Rackspace, but through the strategy shift, service will be accentuated even more.

"As the IT hosting sector evolves, it is becoming apparent that the true competitive differentiator is customer support," said Daniel Golding, vice president and research director, Tier 1 Research. "As the very idea of IT hosting makes the leap into enterprise adoption, those firms that can offer truly outstanding support will come out on top."

Napier added, "As Rackspace leads the industry’s transition to hosted services, we will build upon our core managed hosting business and Fanatical Support. Our new services will compliment our existing portfolio allowing customers to easily offload more and more IT functions to Rackspace."

Since the company’s founding in 1998, Rackspace has grown to more than 2,000 employees world wide, powering through the dotcom bust and moving up to become a leader in the managed hosting space. Growing at approximately 50 percent per year in revenue since the company’s inception nearly ten years ago, Rackspace has been named Microsoft’s "Hosting Provider of the Year" three times, The American Business Awards "Best Customer Service Organization" twice and a "Leader" in Gartner Inc.’s annual North American Web Hosting Magic Quadrant since 2004.

About Rackspace
A recognized leader in the global IT marketplace, Rackspace® delivers a diverse suite of enterprise-class hosted IT services to businesses of all sizes. Customers choose Rackspace for its hosting specialization and expertise, backed by the company’s award-winning Fanatical Support®. By integrating the industry’s best technologies and delivering them as services, Rackspace serves as an extension of its customers’ IT departments. Because Rackspace removes the burden of infrastructure maintenance and management, customers can focus on their core business. Rackspace’s portfolio of companies also includes the Mosso® (www.mosso.com) cloud computing platform and Mailtrust™ (www.mailtrust.com), a provider of business-class hosted email solutions.
Mosso Press Release

Rackspace Survey Reveals that Small Businesses are Missing Out on Cloud Hosting Benefits

Small businesses lack awareness, but medium-sized businesses plan to leverage cloud

SAN ANTONIO – Jan. 26, 2008 – While small businesses lack awareness of cloud hosting, medium-sized businesses appear prepared to reap the benefits of cloud hosting, as revealed in a recent survey conducted by Vanson Bourne for Rackspace® Hosting, (NYSE: RAX), a leader and specialist in hosting. More than half of the mid-sized businesses surveyed are aware of cloud hosting with 57 percent of medium businesses in the US and 53 percent of medium businesses in the UK responding as such.

However, as compared to their medium-sized counterparts, the survey indicates that small businesses may be more confused about current cloud hosting technology and services, and less certain of how to utilize the cloud in the future. With over two-thirds of small businesses in the US and UK unaware of cloud hosting, this business segment appears poised to miss out on a revolutionary opportunity, that can be of great benefit, especially during this tough economic climate.

“The cloud can be a profitable technology for businesses of all sizes and the stats show us small businesses are not yet taking full advantage of the cloud services that are currently available,” said Lew Moorman, chief strategy officer, Rackspace Hosting. “Cloud is a proven technology which is unique in that it is not a one-size-fits all technology. There are different flavors of cloud hosting offerings which allow businesses to take advantage of the benefits of hosting in very price competitive and flexible format which is an ideal mix for all IT departments, no matter their size.”

The survey also shed light on the potential future adoption of cloud hosting. Although only 14 percent of medium businesses in the US and 11 percent in the UK are already utilizing cloud hosting, 55 percent of medium businesses in the US and 42 percent in the UK have plans to use cloud hosting in the future. These respondents identified data storage and back up, replacing centralized computing and boosting server availability as some areas where they would leverage cloud hosting within their IT departments.

Within the US and UK small business markets, nearly 60 percent of the survey respondents have no plans to adopt cloud technology. It appears from these results that small businesses may be shying away from Cloud Hosting because they do not fully understand the added benefits over their existing hosting solution and, even more surprising; they may view the cloud as being cost prohibitive. This could be a detrimental mix up for small businesses in that they could benefit from the cloud’s scalability and cost efficiency, especially when coupled with their current traditional hosting configuration. A hybrid hosting solution can make for a truly powerful option.

“We initially began working with Rackspace Hosting because of their reliability and commitment to service,” said Mike McDerment, CEO of FreshBooks.com. “And since adding cloud hosting to our managed hosting configuration, we now have a solution in place that is tailored to our specific needs. Being able to match a need directly to a technology with Rackspace’s hybrid hosting offering allows us to reap the benefits that count, whether its redundancy, scalability or cost savings.”

Mosso, The Rackspace Cloud
Rackspace’s cloud hosting portfolio is supported by three core offerings, all part of The Rackspace Cloud:

Cloud Sites™
Rackspace’s flagship cloud offering, developed by Mosso, a division of Rackspace, offers a scalable platform for handling huge traffic spikes and a pay-as-you-grow pricing model. Cloud Sites is a heterogeneous environment, supporting both Windows and Linux.

Cloud Files™
Rackspace’s internet-based storage service gives developers instant access to an enterprise-grade storage infrastructure and reduces overall investment and IT costs while providing infinite scalability. Through a partnership with Limelight Networks, Rackspace allows developers to easily distribute content to millions of end users around the world and bring scalable content delivery and application acceleration services to the masses. Cloud Files offers an industry leading SLA and a highly competitive pricing model with replicated storage starting at $0.15/GB and CDN bandwidth starting at $0.22/GB.

Cloud Servers™
This new hosting solution, which will deliver on-demand server capacity to businesses of all sizes, will leverage key technology developed by the company Rackspace recently acquired, Slicehost, which uses Xen virtualization software. Slicehost will remain as the company’s developer brand, creating innovative new features driven through shared intellectual property in conjunction with development initiatives from Rackspace.

The methodology for Rackspace’s survey research which was conducted between mid-October and mid-November of 2008 and involved 1,500 US and UK-based small and midsized companies. Approximately 36 percent of survey recipients responded to the questions. Detailed information and the full survey report can be found at: http://www.rackspace.com/downloads/surveys/CloudAwarenessSurvey.pdf

Mosso Press Release

Mosso, Rackspace’s Cloud Division, Enables Cloud Files with Limelight Networks Content Delivery Service

SAN ANTONIO – November 19, 2008 – Following its recent announcement that it had established a relationship with Limelight Networks to provide a faster, and more robust online storage offering, Mosso®, Rackspace’s® (NYSE:RAX) Cloud Hosting Division, today announced the release of Cloud Files™ enabled with Limelight Networks’ (Nasdaq: LLNW) content delivery service (CDN). This union brings unlimited online storage, scalable content delivery, and application acceleration services, thereby allowing businesses to more easily and affordably distribute content to millions of end users around the world.

Cloud Files, a scalable online storage service, as well as the relationship with Limelight, was announced last month at the Cloud Event as part of the new suite of Cloud Hosting offerings from Rackspace. In conjunction with Cloud Files, Limelight’s robust and proven delivery service helps enable Mosso to quickly deliver files around the globe.

“Using Cloud Files for Action Method Online means that we don’t ever have to worry about running out of space, or adding expensive hardware. We can allow our users to upload as many files as they like while managing their projects and scale seamlessly with amazing performance,” said Chris Henry, Co-CTO, Behance. “And with a CDN leader like Limelight delivering our users’ files, we believe we can count not only on reliability but also on the fastest download time out there.”

Limelight Networks operates a dedicated optical network that interconnects thousands of servers around the world. This network enables the company to deliver massive files at the speed of light directly into the access networks that consumers use every day. When an end user requests a file, Limelight’s network pulls it from the closest Mosso server, caches the content within their geographically distributed network, and serves it up at blazing speeds.

“Limelight Networks’ global delivery platform provides Mosso with world-class performance, scalability, and efficiency, which can help them ensure that any object stored in the Cloud Files service will reliably and efficiently be delivered to their end-users,” said Peter Coppola, vice president, product management, Limelight Networks, Inc.. “This combination of cost effective, unlimited online storage with Limelight’s worldwide distribution platform is truly innovative, and we are proud to work with Mosso and Rackspace to bring this exciting new service to market.”

“The Mosso/Limelight relationship brings full–fledged, robust CDN capabilities and unlimited file storage to developers and corporate IT shops alike. We expect Mosso’s new CDN capability to greatly enhance the quality of the end user experience by speeding the delivery of bandwidth-heavy rich content, including audio and video.” said Emil Sayegh, general manager of Mosso. “For literally pennies per gigabyte of bandwidth and storage and no upfront commitments, the CDN advantage is no longer only available to the giants of the internet. Together with Limelight, we have just democratized content delivery.”

Beyond enabling developers to rapidly and affordably serve content with a simple “right click”, this new CDN capability also adds an additional layer of redundancy for public content. Other Cloud Files benefits include:

Ease of Use: Files can be managed either through an online control panel or programmatically through language specific APIs (ReST, PHP, Python, Java, .NET) Flexibility: Customers can use as much or little storage as necessary, while paying only for what is used Stored files can be as small as a few bytes or as large as 5GB Metadata: Additional metadata can be added, and delivered, along with each file that is stored

Pricing for Cloud Files with CDN starts at 15 cents per gigabyte of storage and 22 cents per gigabyte of bandwidth from any edge location around the globe. High volume users receive price breaks at 30 TB of storage and/or 5 TB of bandwidth. Pricing includes CDN transit services only available through Cloud Files. Mosso CDN integration is available today with no additional fees for CDN-based requests. There are no upfront fees required to get started and end users pay only for storage space and outgoing bandwidth that has been used. For more pricing information, please visit www.mosso.com.
