82 Days Of Diligence Comes Down to This: Demo Day At Start Engine

Three months of hard work, days that blend into each other and an entrepreneurial spirit to succeed come down to a 10 minute or less product pitch in front of a room full of investors. That’s what happened on Demo Day, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Start Engine[1], the new rapid startup accelerator in Los Angeles. And the Rackspace Startup Program[2] would like to congratulate the 10 companies that were born in the inaugural Winter 2012 class at Start Engine.

[3]“This is an historic day in Los Angeles. Our mission is to help LA become a top entrepreneurial startup city. Ten startups came to us with passion and a sense of mission. And today, the most important aspect of these startups is their talent,” proclaimed Howard Marks, co-chair at Start Engine. “Howard and I started our entrepreneurial journey over a quarter century ago. And how we wished there was a program like Start Engine to help us out. Our goal with Start Engine is to create 500 companies in five years,” concluded Marks’ partner Paul Kessler, co-chair of Start Engine, in the opening welcome to investors and guests.

Let’s take a look at the refined Start Engine companies after multiple pivots and name changes along the way:

WeLink[4] – Making relevant connections in the professional events industry. Enables users to instantly connect with everyone in their immediate vicinity.

PROnoise[5] - A musical community dedicated to connecting artists and fans. Provides tools for emerging artists to make money and get attention.

Hypemarks[8] - Discover the web through your friends. Helps users discover the best of the web by exploring curated and filtered recommendations from friends.

thrdPlace[9] - Outsources community development and involvement. Enables members to create and support community projects.

Starbates[10] - Find. Scan. Get rewarded. Publisher of deals in the form of coupons and rewards from merchants for customers.

GonnaBe[12] The platform for what’s going to happen. Makes it easy to make, share and browse plans across social channels.

[13]Once again, congratulations to the Start Engine Winter class of 2012. These companies are now ready to leave the accelerator nest and take flight into the real world. And the Rackspace Startup Program[2] was there to help the Start Engine companies build their businesses on a world-class Cloud Computing platform. Drop the Space Cowboys a note[14] and let us know if you need any information on a startup accelerator near you. Our mission is to connect with people that have great ideas!
