An invitation to Modea
Yesterday some of our employees issued an obscure message to our Blacksburg neighbor and creative design partner, Modea. The message read only… “We invite Modea to meet us at their office on Tuesday, March 3rd at 4:00pm ET to take part in a special presentation.”
To be continued…
Fewer Folding Tables, More People
Since starting at Mailtrust as a part-time college kid four years ago, I’ve seen a lot of change here in the Blacksburg office. Back then, with only 15 employees, things were a lot different. Everyone brought their old couches to work. We only had folding tables. Ben and Brian had ancient keyboards that rattled throughout the entire office. And having dual monitors was reserved for only an elite few.
Now, with nearly 100 employees in Blacksburg and many more in San Antonio, Mailtrust has grown up a little. We have an awesome office, with real desks, lots of monitors, and even a couple TVs and a ping-pong table. And, thankfully, very few folding tables.

Go Ahead, Delete That Email. I Dare You!
Email is the lifeline of most businesses. So, when someone accidentally deletes an important email, it can cause instant panic.
But, before you pull your hair out, let me assure you that we are here to help!
Our Noteworthy platform supports data restores directly through the control panel. In fact, we typically store your data on our servers for 14 days, even after you have deleted it. As long as you have your email set up to leave a copy of your messages on our server (meaning you use the web interface, an email client with an IMAP connection, or a POP3 connection that’s set to leave data on the server), then you can retrieve your data for a period of up to 14 days.
The best part is that, should you accidentally delete an email, all you need to do is contact your account administrator and they can initiate a restore through the control panel—all within a few clicks. The administrator can choose to restore specific folders, or the entire email account. Once a restore is initiated, it usually takes just minutes for the email to be restored to your account.
So, you can breathe a sigh of relief. We’ve got you covered.
MAILTRUST IS HIRING!!
As a country we are undoubtedly going through some tough economic times. Unfortunately, in an effort to survive the downturn, many companies have been forced to slash their hiring plans or, worse, have made the difficult decision to lay off employees.
On the bright side, instead of cutting jobs right now, Mailtrust is doing just the opposite — We’re Hiring! We’re in a position where we have the opportunity to grow, despite the country’s economic challenges, and we are hard at work trying to find the best talent out there to expand our team and build the most trusted business email hosting provider in the world.
So, if you are a techie at heart, you are in luck. We have an abundance of positions open right now, including opportunities for Software Developers, Database Administrators, Linux and Windows Engineers, as well as Microsoft Exchange Engineers. We’re also in need of Security Architects, Systems Monitoring Architects, and Project Managers. You can check out the full list of positions we have open at our careers site.
If you want to learn more about Mailtrust and the work environment we provide, this is the time to reach out to our recruiting team. We will be holding our own Career Fair and Office Tour on Thursday, March 19, 2009 to give job seekers an opportunity to meet our employees, discuss the positions that we have available, and take a tour of our office. You’ll have a chance to see the inside of one of Fortune Magazine’s Top 50 Best Places To Work in the United States two years in a row and find out how our fully stocked break room, company lunches, and a never-ending list of fun employee activities adds to our culture and makes our employees happy to work here. Check out our employee testimonials to hear about it from our employees, themselves.
So, if you have time on March 19 between 12noon and 7pm, stop by the Mailtrust offices at University City Mall in Blacksburg, VA to play a game of ping pong with our developers, shoot the breeze with our engineers, and get a tour of our laid-back office environment from our project managers. You never know what types of amazing opportunities may be sitting right under your nose.
Mailtrust is on Facebook too!
I can remember logging into Facebook for the first time my sophomore year of college. At that time it was a new way to keep in touch with old friends and to see what everyone was up to that weekend. Now, it has evolved into so much more and has even become a popular way to network. During my job search after graduating from Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!), I turned to Facebook and can accredit my job with Mailtrust to a post one of my professors had on his personal page.
Who would have thought that would be a way to find a job?
Facebook continues to play an important role in many people’s lives, and there is now even the option for companies to create their own page. What a brilliant idea! This provides a great opportunity for companies like us to let people see behind the walls and see who we really are as an organization and as individuals.
Melissa, from our Product team, and I keep the page up to date with new photos and videos as well as upcoming events such as, “Pie Your Manager in the Face,” which raised money for our Relay for Life team. We are already up to 128 fans, which means with just one click of a button, we can spread the word on Mailtrust’s upcoming events, like our next company happy hour, or a new photo album that was posted.
So be sure to check out our Facebook page. You won’t want to miss what exciting thing we’re up to next!
Interview Tip: Come With Questions
SCENE: We open in a meeting room, just as an interview is winding down.
INTERVIEWER 1
Well, Mr. Smith, those are all the questions we have for you today. We really
appreciate your time. Do you have any questions for us before we wrap up?
Camera pans to INTERVIEWEE.
MR. SMITH
…
Crickets chirp.
MR. SMITH
…
Wolves howl in the distance.
MR. SMITH
…
Tumbleweed blows through the office.
MR. SMITH
Uhh, I don’t think so.
AND CUT!
Please don’t be Mr. Smith. Even if you spent zero time researching the company before you showed up for the interview (shame on you), you should at least be a little curious about what your day-to-day job is going to be like. This is the best (and possibly only) time for you to get a feel for how the company works. You could easily ask the interviewers what they do on a daily basis, or perhaps ask about what languages the company uses in the software that they write. Nothing says, “I don’t care about whether or not I get a job here,” better than not asking a single question of the interviewers.
Can You Picture Everyone in Your Address Book?
You can with Noteworthy Webmail. We know work and personal networks grow weekly—and so does the challenge of remembering who is who. So we make it easy to upload a photo for each of your contacts . . .
In Webmail, double-click a personal contact and then click the “Browse” button to upload an image. And if your mailbox belongs to a shared contact list, you can double-click your name and upload a picture of yourself that everyone else in the shared list can see.
Now, just think how much better it will be without those uncomfortable hallway moments.
Commitment to Employee Development
One of my favorite things about working for Mailtrust is their dedication to the personal and professional development of their employees. There are many ways that we go about this development: reading a book, attending a conference or a seminar, internal tech talks, external tech talks, involvement in the local development community, and so on. As a software development manager here at Mailtrust, it is often my job (and always my pleasure) to encourage and facilitate this development. This can be anything from ordering a book for an employee, to developing a relevant exercise which encourages best practices, to organizing an entire development conference (Thanks Matt!)
This may sound a little cliché, but I think that one of the things a lot of employers forget is that employees are people, too. If you want to keep the best people, you need to actively encourage them to continue growing. Set aside some money every year to send one or two of your best people to a conference of their choice. In the long run, this investment will pay you back in spades. Not only do you get the immediate benefit of having better trained employees, but those employees also have expanded their social and professional circle. And, that growth will continue well beyond the conference. Furthermore, we “thought industry” types assign more value to employers that help us grow which, in turn, creates more loyal employees.
I bring this up because I’m in a position where I conduct a lot of interviews. One question that we always ask is, “why do you want to leave your current job”? Easily, seventy-five per cent of the time the answer is essentially, “because my employer has no interest in helping me grow.” Please, take my advice and commit to your employees’ growth. If you don’t, you’re liable to watch your best employees walk out the door for places that will. If you think it’s too hard, or too expensive, to commit to their growth, that’s OK too…I’m always looking for new talent.
Creator of Dovecot Joins Mailtrust
Mailtrust recently hired Timo Sirainen to work at our Blacksburg office. Timo is the creator and lead developer for Dovecot, the open source IMAP mail server that we use here at Mailtrust, and has moved here from Finland. Mailtrust and Timo have worked together for several years, but with Timo in the US we will be able to accomplish a lot more in a much shorter timeframe
We’ve asked Timo to give you all his view on his experience thus far. Check it out below:
Posted by Timo Sirainen, Developer of Dovecot, which is arguably the highest performing open-source IMAP server for Linux/Unix.

2009 should be a great year for Dovecot. I’ll be working at Rackspace’s Mailtrust office in Blacksburg, VA for the entire year. With Mailtrust’s support, I’m hoping to get a lot more work done than in the last couple of years combined. In Finland, I was working at home and that didn’t work too well for me (it’s way too easy to start wasting time on TV). I’ve also paused my university studies for this year, so they won’t eat my time, either.
Mailtrust is dedicated to making Dovecot successful, and we share a lot of common ideas. Our priorities for new features are also very similar. After this year, there will be a lot more reasons to choose Dovecot. I’m learning about the complexity of running a large mail server installation with thousands of servers. Just knowing about those could help me implement new features better and get some problems solved more easily in the future.
After being here for only 3 weeks, I think Mailtrust is pretty much the ideal company to work for. People love what they do here and they’re good at it. It seems to be easy to get things done without annoying unnecessary bureaucracy. The environment is pretty relaxed—people take breaks to play Nintendo Wii, ping pong, and eat free snacks. It’s easy to talk to even the top level management. There’s even a person whose job is to make Mailtrust the best place to work for!
Interested in helping me work on Dovecot while I am in the US? Mailtrust is hiring!
Launch: Sync for iPhone
When the iPhone was first released, we jumped at the chance to develop a tool on this great new platform. This happened at the same time that we were really focusing on building up our relationship with Funambol. So what better way to do both, than to go to Italy for two weeks and work alongside their developers on the project?
In April 2008, that’s exactly what I did. I spent two weeks in Pavia, Italy discussing with Funambol how we can work more closely. At the same time, I worked with their team on the core code base of the Funambol iPhone client. The trip was amazing. Since then, we’ve continued to work closely with Funambol on new and old projects.
When I got back to Blacksburg, we set to work customizing the iPhone client for our own users. After many months, and intense coordination efforts with Apple, we’re finally ready to launch. This client is probably the easiest to use of all of our clients, and we are proud to give our valued customers the ability to sync their Noteworthy contacts directly with their iPhone or iPod Touch!
If you are a current customer using Noteworthy you can download the iPhone client from the App Store through iTunes or follow this link.
